It gets much deeper. You might stumble on posts asking whether it’s normal to hear cries that aren’t really there in the middle of the night: phantom cries. They used to call it “insanity of lactation.” Now it’s postpartum psychosis, a rare, severe condition distinct from postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is more common, affecting about one in eight people who give birth. Postpartum psychosis affects roughly one to two per 1,000 births. Depression can mean persistent sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion.
