Let Dagon Fall What happens when our view of God collides with God's Word? What should we do when Scripture challenges our beliefs, our feelings, our experiences, or the way our culture has taught us to think?In this powerful sermon, we explore the increasingly common topic of Christian deconstruction through the story of Dagon and the Ark of God in 1 Samuel 5. The message challenges us to consider what we are truly tearing down—and what we are putting in its place. Biblical renewal is not about abandoning faith when we encounter difficult questions. It is about allowing God's Word and the Holy Spirit to tear down what is false and renew our minds according to truth. We all carry assumptions about God shaped by our families, culture, experiences, desires, and wounds. But when Scripture reveals that our understanding of God is wrong, we are called to let the false picture fall and submit ourselves to the God who has revealed Himself in His Word. This sermon examines the dangers of allowing personal experience, feelings, cultural values, and subjective truth to become the final authority over Scripture. At the same time, it makes clear that asking difficult questions, wrestling with suffering, and examining unhealthy or distorted expressions of Christianity are not themselves signs of rebellion. The critical question is: Who gets the final word? Through examples from Scripture—including David, Habakkuk, Thomas, and the Bereans—we see that genuine faith can ask hard questions while continuing to trust God and submit to His authority. We then turn to Romans 12:1–2 and discover the biblical pattern of transformation: presenting our lives to God as living sacrifices, refusing to be conformed to the world, and allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds through God's Word. The sermon ultimately points us back to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit does not help us invent a Jesus who fits our preferences; He reveals the true Christ presented in Scripture. At the cross, we see both the holiness of God and the incredible mercy of God—Jesus is holy enough to confront sin and compassionate enough to save sinners.
