You Are Not Your Past [Day 176 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Repentance 33]

Episode Description from the Publisher

In this final lesson from the Gate of Repentance (Shaar HaTeshuvah), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that a true baal teshuvah is marked by humility. A person who has sincerely changed should not be discouraged when others remind them of their past or mock their transformation. Those painful moments can themselves become part of the reward for teshuvah. At the same time, the Torah strongly forbids humiliating a penitent by bringing up sins they have already abandoned. The Orchot Tzaddikim concludes the chapter by encouraging the baal teshuvah to pursue good deeds, distance themselves from empty worldly distractions, accept the yoke of Torah, and remain steadfast even when others ridicule their new direction. The person who has returned to Hashem must learn to ignore the scorn of those who do not understand their growth and continue forward with prayer, faith, and determination.Rabbi Wolbe closes this lengthy journey with the central message of the entire chapter: Teshuva is one of the greatest gifts Hashem has given humanity—the power to change. No person is trapped by their habits, flaws, failures, or past identity. Hashem gives each of us strengths and weaknesses, and our mission is to transform the entire package into greatness. Every person has something to repair, whether it is a private sin before Hashem, a neglected mitzvah, a hurtful word, or an injury caused to another person. Real teshuva means identifying that area, confessing honestly, seeking forgiveness where necessary, and making a sincere commitment to live differently. The chapter ends not with guilt, but with hope. Every human being has made mistakes, and every human being has the capacity to return. Teshuva allows us to stop saying, “That is just the way I am,” and begin saying, “This is who I am becoming.”_____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on December 22, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on July 29, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Share your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content. _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life. To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism.
