Geordie starts light, growing up on a bit of land outside Dalby with his old man teaching at the local state school, and reckons Progress Street in Kwinalei has seen the least progress of any street in the country. Geordie’s memory of her is a good one. The day a supply teacher marched him and his mates off the school oval for climbing trees at lunch, dumped them in Stacey’s office, and Stacey just looked at them and said “you probably shouldn’t have been in the tree, so walk out of here and look sad.” Geordie talks about the subtle signs he can see looking back, the family relationships that were already breaking down, and what it’s like watching someone you knew as a decent human end up somewhere unthinkable.
