Sunday’s OT and Epistle—1 Kings 17:17–24; Eph. 3:13–21

You have stood where the widow stood and thought what she thought. The diagnosis, the phone call, the casket: God has remembered, and this is the bill. You are half right. Death is the wages of sin, and you have earned it. But you have read the sentence wrong. God’s man came to her house not to collect but to lie down on the dead and give him breath. God’s Son came to yours the same way, unasked, and laid His living body on your death at the font. He did not wait for your words. You had none; the dead do not pray. He does exceedingly abundantly above all you ask or think, and He has already done it: Christ dwells in your heart through faith. He is your table companion, and He did not come empty-handed. So when the outer man fails, and it will, the last word over your grave will not be your sin remembered but His voice: I say to you, arise.
