The Meaning of the Zombie Apocalypse
Ian and I discuss Vervaeke et. al.’s writing on the symbol of the zombie apocalypse. They show that our use of “apocalypse” is a telling transformation of the original Christian one. The modern, secular apocalypse gradually lost vestiges of its Christian roots, and it and the zombie found each other almost magically, in an unholy marriage. Then this union broke out into the real world. We discuss the meaning of zombies and this apocalyptic symbol. We interpret it partly as a movement within the individual soul and link it to other kinds of spiritual transformation. Grimm’s “The Three Snake-Leaves:” Bewitched by Beauty
A poor man’s son leaves his large family with great sorrow so he will not be a burden. He joins the army of an emperor and turns the tide of a large battle and is given treasures and the chance to marry the princess. She has a strange requirement, however: whoever marries her must agree to be buried with her if she dies first. He agrees because she is so beautiful. She gets ill and passes away, and he is put in the tomb with her. He survives by rationing bread and wine set out, and he kills a snake that slithers in. But another enters and heals it with leaves, and he revives the princess with them. They leave the tomb. On an ocean voyage, the princess, who has lost her love for her husband, throws him overboard with the help of the skipper. The prince’s servant, however, rows out to him and revives him with the leaves, and they return before the princess and her new consort and tell the king what happened. When the princess disembarks, she tries to laud the skipper to the king, but their perfidy is revealed to the king. She pleads for mercy but is sent out on a perforated ship along with her conspirator by her father. In this episode, we summarize the story and then discuss the characters of the poor man’s son and the princess. We talk about its reviving the princess with a serpent, the vanity of the princess, and the earnestness of the poor man’s son to prove himself and protect the group. We also talk about the character of the king, who reminds one of Shakespeare’s Prospero. Grimm’s “The Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was”
Who Do You Think You Are? Anyone interested in the education of the individual might enjoy a few minutes with this light, yet important tale. There is a folktale trope of the dummling who, useless at home, ventures forth to find his fate. This story’s idiot seems to lack something fundamental–the ability to shudder at ghost stories or at fearful experiences–but he knows this, and reminds himself continually that he wants to learn. A waggoner who was striding behind him heard this and asked, “Who are you?” “I don’t know,” answered the youth. Then the waggoner asked, “From whence do you come?” “I know not.” The anonymous protagonist is contrasted with established figures all around him that act and react normally. And yet it is his lack–a kind of ignorance–that is the key to his journey through many frightening experiences, and when he overcomes those, he is able to rid his country of the multifarious evils that are barely contained in its castle.
