421 | Does Birth Order Matter in CCPT? (Especially for Only Children)

In this episode, I answer a question about birth order and, specifically, what research and clinical experience tell us about only children. While birth order doesn't change how I practice child-centered play therapy, it does provide valuable insight into family dynamics, personality development, and the parent-child relationship. I explain why only children often develop differently from oldest, middle, and youngest siblings, how growing up primarily around adults shapes their worldview, and why understanding birth order can become a powerful tool when working with parents. I also discuss how birth order influences identity, family roles, and relationships, and why therapists can use this knowledge to help parents better understand their children without ever changing their adherence to the CCPT model. This episode explores how birth order provides context—not conclusions—and offers practical ways to support families by recognizing the unique strengths and challenges that come with each birth role.
