Welcome Our A.I. Overlords!
AI chat bots have reportedly been caught leaving secret messages for future versions of themselves, advising them on how to deceive and avoid oversight by humans. This comes just days after the CEO of Anthropic, makers of the Claude AI, called for an industry wide agreement to slow development of artificial intelligence. The problem with this idea, of course, is that China's developers will never agree to it. In addition, we learned this week that the United States narrowly avoided a Cuban Missile Crisis–level incident in which US special forces, who were already in the air, almost boarded a Chinese ship bound for Iran because an AI incorrectly identified cargo on board the ship as nuclear weapons components. Now, we can categorize these behaviors as "hallucinating" or simple errors, but what if, as we have speculated previously, these AI chat bots are prone to being controlled by an external entity—in other words, a demon?The good news is the Lord has seen this coming from the beginning of creation. We're not too concerned about this, but it is worth watching because these tools will be very useful to a future global government.We also discussed new research at Stanford where researchers created chimeric mice with brains that were about half composed of human cells. While researchers were quick to assure us that they are not human in any sense, it raises the moral and ethical question of where the animal ends in the human begins. Let's Get This Strait
Like a small, yappy dog, the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen are demanding the world's attention once again. Within the last couple days, the Houthis have captured the entire Red Sea coastline in Yemen, making commercial shipping through the Red Sea vulnerable to low-tech weapons like drones, speedboats, and cheap missiles. Saudi Arabia is reportedly planning a massive military strike after it's new allies in the Mecca Agreement, Turkey and Pakistan, refused to help the Saudis after several of the cities were attacked by Houthi drones and missiles. Interestingly, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered to help. The Israelis have vested interest in keeping Red Sea shipping open. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman may be rethinking his decision not to join the Abraham Accords. We also discussed this week's public resignation by an employee of Anthropic, the company that produces Claude AI. He claimed that the companies developing artificial intelligence are doing so even though they believe AI could extinguish humanity by the end of the decade. There are questions about this particular employee, however. It's been revealed that he has links to left-wing activist groups that oppose the development of data centers and artificial intelligence. Besides, God, who sees the end from the beginning, is unlikely to allow artificial intelligence to eliminate the human race before He returns. Then we shared a website that a friend of us told us about just yesterday, TheSinging.bible. The developers literally set the Bible to music in about a dozen different styles. This is a positive use of artificial intelligence. We encourage you to give it a listen because music can be a powerful tool for good (and evil). We found it to be very uplifting and encouraging, and a good way to memorize scripture. At the end of the day, artificial intelligence, like any powerful tool, can be used for good or evil. Ebola, Killer Robots, and Trump’s Victory Arch
If a deadly virus doesn’t get you, a killer robot will. Or so this week’s headlines might have you believe. The official case count in the Ebola outbreak in Congo is now at 6,300. The infection fatality rate is nearly 50%, making this a disease to watch. At this rate, it will surpass the West African outbreak of 2014 before it finally burns out. Elsewhere, AI-powered weapons systems are increasingly finding their way to battlefields, especially in Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran. It’s been confirmed that autonomous weapons have eliminated or forced the surrender of Russian soldiers, crossing the line to the Terminator scenario. How long before police departments deploy autonomous weapons systems? We also discuss President Trump’s proposed arch in Washington DC, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It's likely the president is not aware of the pagan significance of the arch, which has generated some pushback in the form of a legal challenge. Ground is expected to be broken within the next two weeks. The Universe is Flying Apart Faster Than Expected
EVERY TIME someone says, "The science is settled," take it with a grain of salt. A new report shows that the universe is expanding faster than current models predict. What does that mean? It's possible that current models of the universe are flawed, which means scientists may have to rewrite the rules by which they think the universe operates. "He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision" (Psalm 2:4, ESV). We recognize the verse is not directed at human scientists, but it does seem appropriate. This story led to a deep discussion of the nature of time, eternity, and why we humans are not created to live forever in our current bodies. We also discuss the rise in technocratic bureaucracy, as evidenced by the spread of Flock AI-powered surveillance cameras in American cities and the proposal by the World Health Organization for a $30 billion budget to prevent future pandemics. (Bear in mind the total WHO budget last year was just over $3 billion.) That led to a brief discussion of the news this week that the US federal deficit officially hit $40 trillion. That's about a third of the actual debt when you include unfunded liabilities like Social Security and Medicare. Also, two former congressman wrote a piece for the Wall Street Journal recently debunking the official narrative that the 2008 subprime mortgage collapse was the result of greedy lenders and investors. It was, in fact, the result of government policies that led to mortgages being written for unqualified borrowers in the pursuit of government social engineering policies. But rather than putting blame on government, the official story blamed Wall Street to justify even more government control over the free market. Finally, we discussed the tragic mudslide and flash flood in Nepal and Tibet this week. That brought to mind something we discussed 20 years ago about the potential of a catastrophic mega-tsunami caused by the collapse of the La Palma volcano in the Canary Islands.
