228. Why Wolf Recovery Is So Controversial with Tommy Serafinski

Last week on the show, we covered major changes to the Endangered Species Act here in the United States, including the rescission of the definition of "harm." Simply put, this means that habitat destruction would no longer be classified as harm to an endangered species, opening the door to activities such as logging and other forms of extraction and development. The problem with this is that habitat loss is one of the leading causes of species extinction.Wolves, like the gray wolf and the red wolf, in North America, are among the many animals caught in the crosshairs of this ruling. But this is far from the first time wolves, and specifically the management of those wolves, have made headlines this year. And what’s interesting when focusing on wolves in this conversation is that wolf conservation, recovery, and protection are viewed through a surprisingly controversial lens that spans generations and borders. There are multiple sides to the story of wolf conservation, and many of them are driven by emotion, like our guest today, Tommy Serafinski, mentions throughout the episode. And a part of feeding into that education is learning how other parts of the world approach conservation.
