Our Words Are Never Hidden from God
Once when the king of Syria was warring against Israel, he took counsel with his servants, saying, “At such and such a place shall be my camp.”2 Kings 6:8Here is another remarkable story from the life of Elisha, and this story is especially for all who are fearful. If you feel that darkness is closing in. If you are saying, “What am I going to do?” If you find it difficult to sleep at night, this story is for you. The king of Syria wanted to ambush the king of Israel. You can almost see him poring over the map, with his advisors huddled around him saying, “The king of Israel will be there: That’s where we will take him.” But God disrupts the plans of the wicked (Ps. 146:9). He revealed the enemy’s plans to Elisha, and Elisha warned the king of Israel. This king was receiving military intelligence direct from Almighty God! The king was always one step ahead of his enemies. This was infuriating to the king of Syria. “When we show up, the king of Israel has already moved on! He seems to know when we are coming. But how? There must be a spy in our court.” So we read, “The mind of the king of Syria was greatly troubled… and he called his servants and said… ‘Will you not show me who of us is for the king of Israel?’” (2 Kings 6:11). Then one of his servants told him there was no spy in his court. “Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom” . God knows every word you have ever spoken. He even knows the words you speak in your bedroom.Does knowing this comfort you or make you angry?

Our Greed, Lies, and Deception Are Never Hidden from God
Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, “See, my master has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not accepting from his hand what he brought. As the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”2 Kings 5:20After being healed, Naaman wanted to show his gratitude. He brought a boatload of money, and so he said to Elisha, “Accept now a present from your servant” . But Elisha refused. And as Naaman headed home, Elisha’s servant, Gehazi, went after him.He said, “My master has sent me to say, ‘There have just now come to me… two young men of the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver’” . So, Naaman gave him the money.Gehazi lied. He coveted. And he deceived. Worst of all, he contradicted what Elisha had been teaching Naaman—that God’s grace is wonderfully free. When Elisha asked, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” he said, “Your servant went nowhere” .But God had already revealed to Elisha what Gehazi was up to . Gehazi wanted what Naaman had, and he got what Naaman had—his money, and his leprosy too! “The leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever” .Gehazi had seen God work in marvellous ways, but there were layers of his life that he had never submitted to God. Jesus said, “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known” (Luke 12:2).So, learn from the story of Gehazi to be done with greed, to be done with lies, and to be done with deception. Whatever you have done, and whatever consequences it has brought, there is hope for you in Jesus Christ. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).Is there anything you have been trying to hide from God? Take a moment to confess it to Him.

Maybe You Are Offended by God’s Command, but Have You Heard His Promise?
But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?”2 Kings 5:13Naaman took offence at the command to go and wash. But did he hear the promise? Elisha said, “Wash, and be clean.”Perhaps this is your position. There is something that God calls you to do and you don’t want to do it. Something God calls you to give up and you don’t want to give it up. You are offended at God’s command, but have you heard His promise? You shall be clean.Naaman listened to his servants. He believed and obeyed what God had commanded: “He… dipped himself seven times in the Jordan… and his flesh was restored… and he was clean” .Here is what God can do for you in Jesus Christ. You can be clean. You will never be able to cleanse yourself. No prophet, no king, no philosophy or religion, no effort you make to put things right will cleanse you either. But the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse you from all sin.When Naaman was washed and made clean, he became a worshipper of the living God. “Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel… From now on your servant will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god but the LORD” (5:15, 17).Here we have the story of a man who knew nothing of the God of the Bible, but he is wonderfully converted. How did it happen? He heard that there was hope for him. He humbled himself. He believed the promise of God. He acted in faith and obedience.Are you so focused on how offensive one of God’s commands is to you that you have tuned out His promise?

Don’t Let Pride Hold You Back
“When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you Naaman my servant, that you may cure him of his leprosy.”2 Kings 5:6Things didn’t go so well when Naaman met with Israel’s king: “When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, ‘Am I God… that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy?’” (5:7).Elisha heard what was happening, and he sent a message to the king: “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come now to me, that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel” (5:8).“So Naaman came… and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, ‘Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean’” (5:9-10).This was not what Naaman expected: “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand” .Elisha wanted Naaman to have faith in God. He didn’t want Naaman to think the power lies in him. But Naaman was angry because...Elisha had hurt his pride. “I thought he would surely come out to me” . The gospel humbles us. Before God, you are a sinner, and your position is no better than any other sinner.Elisha only offered one way to be cleansed. There were other rivers in Damascus: “Could I not wash in them and be clean?” . The gospel tells us that there is only one way to be cleansed. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7).He didn’t want to do what Elisha said. “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times” (2 Kings 5:10). The gospel calls us to do something we don’t want to do. Go wash. Repent. The proud and sinful heart rejects this command.Naaman was angry, so “he turned and went away in a rage” .Is pride keeping you from God’s cleansing and forgiveness today?

You Can Be a Shining Light in a Dark Place
Now the Syrians on one of their raids had carried off a little girl from the land of Israel, and she worked in the service of Naaman’s wife.2 Kings 5:2Naaman did not know God, but God brought someone who did know Him into Naaman’s life. She was a little girl, whose name we don’t even know.This girl had learned in her early years about the God of the Bible. She knew that when God’s people sinned against Him, He sent prophets to call the people back to Himself. She knew that God was still speaking through the prophet Elisha.Then without warning, raiders arrived and seized this little girl. Naaman decided that she would be an excellent servant for his wife.After what she had endured it would not be surprising if she took pleasure in Naaman’s illness. Instead, we are told that she said to her mistress, “Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy” (5:3).This little girl is a wonderful example of being a shining light in a dark place. She is full of faith, full of hope, and full of love. She believes that God loves her enemies, so she loves them too. She prays for them and longs for them to know her God.Naaman took her words seriously. He told his boss what she had said, and the king said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel” (5:5).In what dark place could you shine God’s love and hope today?

Here Is a Picture of What Sin Does in Our Lives
Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high favour; because by him the LORD had given victory to Syria. He was a mighty man of valour, but he was a leper.2 Kings 5:1The story of Naaman is another story from the life of Elisha. Naaman was known for his strength and courage in battle. With that reputation, he would have risen through the ranks until he became the “commander of the army.” Not many people reach these heights.Naaman was “in high favour” with the king. Notice why: “because by him the LORD had given victory to Syria” (5:1). God gave victories to the enemies of His people!This truth is clear in Scripture: When God’s people sinned against Him, He gave them into the hands of their enemies. Success comes from the hand of God whether a person knows Him or not.Naaman was blessed with success, but he also had a great affliction: “He was a leper” (5:1). This terrible reality outweighed everything else. He was facing a grim future.Leprosy in the Bible is a picture of what sin does in our lives. Sin makes us guilty, so we need to be forgiven. But sin also defiles us, so we need to be cleansed.Like leprosy, sin starts small, but it spreads. It is hidden at the beginning, but eventually it shows. It alienates us from God and from His people. And in Bible times, there was no known cure.As we follow Naaman’s story, we are going to see not only how he was healed, but also how a sinner can be cleansed and reconciled to God.How have you seen the effects of sin grow and spread in your life? God Can Work Through You
God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak… to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised… even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.1 Corinthians 1:27-29In the miracles of Elisha, we see two truths: God’s work continues despite our foolish mistakes, and God’s work advances despite our obvious inadequacies. These truths should have three effects in our lives.1. They should humble usGod’s work does not continue or advance because of some greatness in us. It continues despite our obvious inadequacies and our foolish mistakes. These truths should keep us humble.2. They should comfort usGod’s story is always a story of redemption. So don’t ever let your foolish mistakes and your obvious inadequacies crush you. Use your foolish mistakes to learn wisdom. And use your obvious inadequacies to grow in faith. The Christian life is not about what you can do for God. It is about what God can do through you when you place yourself into His hands.3. They should encourage usIf God can work through a student who can’t tell a safe plant from a poisonous one, then God can work through you. If God can work through a poor farmer whose firstfruits amount to only 20 loaves, then God can work through you.God works through people who make foolish mistakes. He works through people who have obvious inadequacies. And that means that God can work through you.Are the truths from the stories of Elisha having any effect in your life? God’s Work Advances Despite Our Inadequacies
A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing the man of God bread of the firstfruits.2 Kings 4:42A farmer arrived with food for the sons of the prophets. These students are living through a famine, and this farmer says that he has brought “the firstfruits” of his harvest.The students hope he has a really big farm! But the cart is almost empty. There’s just one sack with only 20 loaves of bread and some grain. It must have been a massive disappointment.Elisha said to his servant Gehazi, “Give to the men, that they may eat.” And Gehazi said, “How can I set this before a hundred men?” Elisha gave the same command again, adding, “for thus says the LORD, ‘They shall eat and have some left’” (4:42-43). God multiplied the food, and “They ate and had some left, according to the word of the LORD” .Perhaps you want to be useful to God, but you don’t feel you have much to offer. Remember this farmer. Never underestimate what God can do through your faith and obedience!You can’t read this story without thinking about the greater miracle to which it points. A large crowd had gathered to listen to Jesus in a desert place. The disciples found a small boy with five loaves and two fish, “but what are they for so many?” (John 6:9).The loaves and fish were multiplied in the hands of Jesus, and a vast crowd was fed. There were 12 baskets of food left over. God’s work advances despite our obvious inadequacies.Are you facing an overwhelming task today? You can say with the apostle Paul, “Who is sufficient for these things?” (2 Cor 2:16). And you need to hear the answer: “Our sufficiency is from God” (3:5).Do you feel inadequate for some task that you know God is calling you to? Ask God to multiply your efforts!
