Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Did you ever look up in the sky and see something weird, something you can't explain? In this episode we have 3 stories about unexplained things in the night sky. Our first story explores the efforts of a group of St. Joe High School students from Cleveland, Ohio who figured out a way to listen to and track the Soviet satellite, Sputnik, even before our own military. They then created a device from a slide rule and a globe to assist in their efforts. Their efforts landed the boys on TV stations, newspapers, magazines then a visit by the FBI who promptly confiscated all their recorded tapes. Tune in and find out what happened next! Our next story we look at astronomer Jerry Ehman in 1977 using the Ohio State University Big Ear radio telescope. His volunteer job was to simply examine marks on an endless scroll of paper searching for anomalies, outlying marks indicating signals from out space. These signals may show something or someone trying to make contact us here on earth. On this particular day, in review of the data, the signal was so strong he made a notation "WOW" indicating the unusual signal that he had never seen before. This weird and strong signal was so strange, it caused arguments and discussion that continue to this day. Find out what happened and what people think the signal may or may not be. Our final story is about a mystery. A mystery that may or not exist at all. Its yjr infamous Hangar 18 at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Some people think that the aliens that were rumored to have been recovered from a UFO crash at the infamous Roswell, NM crash. Were these alien bodies taken there? Who's allowed there? What really goes on there? Tune in and found out! Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Ohio played an outsized role in shaping the leadership of the Union and Confederacy during the American Civil War—producing a remarkable number of generals who would go on to influence not only the outcome of the war, but the future of the nation itself. In this episode, we explore the lives and legacies of some of the Buckeye State’s most prominent military leaders, including Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, and George McClelllan. From Grant’s steady rise to overall command of Union forces, to Sherman’s ruthless and transformative campaigns across the South, these men redefined modern warfare through strategy, innovation, and sheer determination. We’ll uncover how Ohio’s frontier spirit, political climate, and growing industrial power helped shape these commanders—and why so many Union generals traced their roots back to towns and cities across the state. Along the way, we’ll dive into battlefield decisions, personal rivalries, and the lasting impact these leaders had long after the guns fell silent. Join us as we journey through war-torn America and discover how Ohio became a proving ground for some of the most influential military minds in U.S. history. Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. In the quiet railroad town of Bellefontaine, crates of bananas once arrived daily—ordinary cargo masking an extraordinary and sinister story. In this episode, we dive into the shadowy world of the so-called “Society of the Banana,” a chilling chapter tied to the rise of the Black Hand in small-town Ohio. What seemed like a simple fruit business became entangled with whispers of extortion, secret threats, and violence carried over from the Old World into America’s heartland. Through the lens of a brutal early 20th-century crime, we explore how immigrant communities were targeted, how coded warnings and fear spread through tight-knit neighborhoods, and how something as innocent as a shipment of bananas could conceal a much darker reality. Join us as we peel back the layers of this forgotten mystery—where commerce, crime, and culture collided in Bellefontaine, and where the reach of the Black Hand may have been closer than anyone dared to admit.
