The actors worked mostly from loose instructions and improvised their dialogue, often without knowing what the others had been told. Filming took place mostly in Seneca Creek State Park, Maryland, with scenes around Burkittsville and the finale shot at the Griggs House in Patapsco Valley State Park. During the eight-day shoot, the filmmakers secretly made noises, shook the actors' tent, and left creepy objects for them to find, helping capture real reactions. The movie's marketing also famously presented Heather, Josh, and Mike as actual missing people, convincing some early viewers the footage might be real.
