It is easy to feel pretty good about ourselves when we measure righteousness by the things we have not done. Most of us can hear the command, “Do not murder,” and immediately think, “Well, I’ve got that one covered.” But as Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount, He refuses to let us stop at the surface. He takes God’s Law and brings it directly to the human heart, showing us that sin is not merely about what we do with our hands—it is also about what we harbor in our hearts and what we speak with our mouths. Anger, resentment, bitterness, contempt, and hatred may never become physical violence, but they can reveal the same heart that God calls us to confront. Jesus is not simply giving us another list of rules to follow; He is showing us what a transformed life looks like when the gospel changes us from the inside out. And because we have been forgiven and reconciled to God through Christ, we are called to extend that same grace to others by becoming people who are quick to forgive, quick to seek forgiveness, and quick to pursue reconciliation. The question Jesus places before us is not simply, “Have you ever murdered someone?” but something much more personal: Where is your anger taking you?
