The Crusades - Battle for the Holy Land

In civil society, we are taught that violence is only justified in special contexts, carried out with careful measure and in the defense of that which is good. Extending that logic, warfare becomes just if the cause is righteous - against a foe who is corrupt - and justifies the sometimes brutal nature of conflict. This notion of moral war extends back centuries, and is used - and abused - by many an opportunistic politician to take power selfishly at the expense of others, which sadly seems to be a pattern held to this very day. In the Christian world, the Crusades are often seen as the prime example of a holy war fought against invaders to retake Christian lands lost a millennia ago - and is thus venerated and scorned in equal measure by its proponents and critics alike.
