I’ve spent the better part of a decade yelling about metal on the internet, and now I’m doing it here.I’m Greg Kennelty — a longtime metal journalist, editor, and self-proclaimed professional opinion-haver. Over the years I’ve written thousands of articles, interviewed hundreds of bands, argued with strangers about inconsequential things like what metal is, and somehow made a career out of caring way too much about riffs.I was a Freelancer and then Head Editor of Metal Injection for a collective 13 years. These days I’m also a freelancer at Gear Gods, Loudwire, and Decibel Magazine. Now I've got this podcast and a Substack that offers dedicated weekly metal newsletters.

Why the 8-strings? How do they write such short songs that're simple, effective bangers? What the hell is a Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol anyway? Now I've got the answers and a little insight into their latest record, Ca$h Grab – whose name also has an interesting story behind it!

Jason spoke about how he decied to do the documentary, what he learned along the way, and offered a really interesting perspective on what it means to preserve media. The film features Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri and others, and covers the Coachella Valley community that produced Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age and Fu Manchu. It’s been unavailable since its original distribution deal expired in 2020. The 10th Anniversary Special Edition – out November 20 – adds new material on Black Flag’s 1981 Palm Springs show, including audio and photographs.

This one’s a two-parter – the first covers the upcoming Testament record and how it’s even more aggressive than Para Bellum, Testament’s legendary drummers over the years, Chuck’s lyrical writing partners, and 30 years since Chuck tried out for Sepultura after Max Cavalera left! The second portion is all about Chuck’s upcoming book Holding My Breath: The Two Testaments of Chuck Billy.
📩 Read the newsletter: https://mostlyyelling.substack.com/ 🎙️ Listen to the podcast: https://gmkennelty.podbean.com/ 🦉 Check out Wise Blood Records here: https://wisebloodrecords.bandcamp.com/ This week I’m joined by Sean Frasier, the founder and head of Wise Blood Records. We covered everything from Sean’s moves around the country to getting into metal writing, to the label giving a start to bands like Castle Rat and Mother Of Graves, to Wise Blood Records’ classic slogan “Our riffs are mean. We’re not.”
📩 Read the newsletter: https://mostlyyelling.substack.com/ 🎙️ Listen to the podcast: https://gmkennelty.podbean.com/ 💀 Get into Mother Of Graves: https://motherofgraves.bandcamp.com/album/the-light-that-keeps-us I caught up with Mother Of Graves guitarist Chris Morrison to talk about the band’s brand new album The Light That Keeps Us, which I’d wager is their best (and saddest) effort to date. We also touched on our collective love of Edge Of Sanity, the magic that is Dan Swanö (and his guest spot on the record), Chris’ history in heavy music, and what we’ve both been listening to lately.
📩 Read the newsletter: https://mostlyyelling.substack.com/ 🎙️ Listen to the podcast: https://gmkennelty.podbean.com/ 🥲 Listen to Pain: https://painband.bandcamp.com/music 👽 Listen to Hypocrisy: https://hypocrisy.bandcamp.com/ This episode I’m (proverbially) headed back to Sweden for an interview with Peter Tägtgren! We covered everything from the new Pain single to the band getting huge thanks to Nokia ringtones back in the day; Hypocrisy and their shifts in sound; and of course – Bloodbath, specifically their 2004 track “Eaten”.
📩 Read the newsletter: https://mostlyyelling.substack.com/ 🎙️ Listen to the podcast: https://gmkennelty.podbean.com/ 💀 Get into Iapetus: https://iapetus1.bandcamp.com/album/the-mother-void This week I’ve got progressive metal masterminds Jordan Navarro and Matthew Cerami of the band Iapetus. We pretty extensively talked about the band signing to Willowtip Records, their new record The Mother Void and the band working with vocalist Fabienne Erni of Eluveitie on every single song, and the band’s trip to Sweden to record with Jens Bogren – plus Matt getting really, really sick on the way there.
📩 Read the newsletter: https://mostlyyelling.substack.com/ 🎙️ Listen to the podcast: https://gmkennelty.podbean.com/ 💀 Get into The Acacia Strain: https://youaresafefromgodhere.com/ After going back and forth online about awesome doom bands, I finally had The Acacia Strain guitarist Devin Shidaker on the podcast! We focused pretty heavily on The Acacia Strain’s transition period between Coma Witch and It Comes In Waves, as well as the writing process behind a lot of the newer (and very diverse) stuff. And as seems to be the case every few episodes, we talked about Metallica.
