“How many people do you think go into a bar and say: ‘I’d like an Everclear on the rocks, please…’?” Looking back, 1997 seems utterly surreal… To put things in perspective, 1997 marked the debut of South Park on Comedy Central, the release of Radiohead’s breakthrough, third album, OK Computer, the beginning of the final season of Seinfeld, and (of course) the arrival of Metallica’s conclusion to The Loads with Reload. Perhaps one of the most surreal (and tragic) parts of 1997 was the time a bunch of children in a band called Hanson went viral with a song called MMMBop while a lesser known, criminally underrated, and FAR SUPERIOR band (with an extremely similar sounding name, consisting of former members of Helmet & Quicksand) called Handsome released their one (and only) album, Handsome, earlier that same year. Sometimes life is just too weird and utterly unfair… It’s time to discover the power of “a better magical piece of paper” that is not a college degree and understand that whenever someone uses the term ‘dating’ that “we know exactly what they’re talking about”. Find out who “stayed metal the whole time”, who was “chuggin’ the D”, and who wasn’t going to metal shows “unless it was Metallica” when you JOIN US as we go back in time almost 30 years with THE CLASS OF 1997. “It’s the most readable death metal logo I’ve ever seen in my life…” Dave and Joe Haley. If you’re trying to understand the importance of this particular drum & guitar team, just think of some of the other legendary “band of brothers” in the metal community that come to mind who have gone on to elevate and transform modern music as we know it…brothers such as Alex & Eddie Van Halen and Vinnie & Darrell Abbott. Formed in 1999 (“the year of the Matrix”) and hailing from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, technical death metal juggernauts PSYCROPTIC have swiftly evolved from the stereotypical “cookie monster” style of traditional death metal into an exponentially advanced, ultra precise, tech death riff machine of such complex artistry & surgical precision that the only proper response to have when listening to them is to laugh out loud in amazement and exclaim “WHOA!” with utter disbelief, shock, and awe at such incredible technical proficiency and prowess. Hear one of the most complimentary voicemails we’ve ever received, never forget that “you’ve gotta use your teeth” whenever you are “schlebbin or schluppin”, and find out how snakes bang when you JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with the most technically gifted band of tech death Aussies we’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to with PSYCROPTIC. Summary: “Have you ever been to a buffet where you literally try everything?” Sometimes the best way to find your new favorite things is to just sample a lot of different things until you find the things that you enjoy the most. As with a buffet…or even dating, you just “grab something” you think you might like and “give it a taste”. If you like it, you keep going back for more. And if it’s not your thing, you simply continue the process of sampling and tasting other things until you find something you truly enjoy. Founded by Markus Staiger in Donzdorf, Germany way back in 1987, NUCLEAR BLAST has signed a myriad of metal artists over the years from across the spectrum of sub genres, ranging from hardcore and symphonic metal to industrial metal, thrash metal, and beyond, including some top tier legacy thrash bands from the 1980’s that enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the 2000’s (fun fact: Slayer’s final studio album, Repentless, is the highest charting NUCLEAR BLAST release in the United States, making it to Number 4 on the Billboard 200.) In the context of this particular episode, we are referring to our recent sampling of the artist roster from NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS, and much like with dating and buffets, there were some bands we enjoyed more than others, some that were right up our alley and REALLY hit the spot, and some that just weren’t our cup of tea (so to speak), but rest assured that everything we sampled was most definitely interesting and we learned a few things along the way. Prepare for the most philosophical voicemail about metal music that we’ve ever received, realize that when it comes to power outages and paranormal activity that “I just wanna make sure that they know that I know that they know” and remember that “sometimes, wet’s not bad” when you JOIN US on our sampling expedition of the NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS artist roster. “No sink or nothing, right? You’re just gonna go free ball it…” 1989 was the very first year EVER that The Recording Academy recognized hard rock and metal music with the “Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental”. And other than the completely insulting “slap in the face” by The Recording Academy to Metallica (think Will Smith & Chris Rock, but even more childish, petty, and completely unnecessary), there were no other Big Four albums or happenings in 1989. (SIDEBAR: Y’know, maybe it’s just speculation, conspiracy theory, or just good old-fashioned karma in action, but the way Metallica “lost” that Grammy, it’s like they were literally “deleted from the mix” of nominees, so to speak. Not unlike a certain bass player from a certain mix on a certain album. Moving on…) “Just gonna raw dog it…” As we are all aware, metal (especially thrash) is far more than just The Big Four, and 1989 was actually quite an excellent year for metal. As thrash was nearing the zenith of its popularity, Wrathchild America’s debut album, Climbin’ The Walls, hit the record store shelves, Exodus, Testament, and Sepultura each released legendary 3rd albums, and Nuclear Assault released the first, the best, and arguably one of the most revolutionary lyric videos in the history of music for Critical Mass, featuring a one-eyed smiley face saying, “Follow me!” and a “Required Nasty Bit”, courtesy of Jessica Hahn. “What is YOUR favorite album of 1989?” Prepare yourself for a bit of obscure Metal Nerdery 1989-centric trivia, embrace what it means to receive your “first JOB”, and find out what you should definitely NOT do in your landlord’s pool when you JOIN US as we fire up the time machine and go check out THE CLASS OF 1989. Death. The word alone possesses the same tangible finality and permanence as the act itself. Death marks the end of one’s physical life & existence in this world and can come as a tragic, sudden, and untimely end, or as the sometimes “welcome” final resolution of life following a long, protracted period of illness and suffering. “We got to live on the same earth at the same time as all these dudes…” Regardless of how it presents, death impacts every single human on earth. Whether it’s the death of a loved one or our own mortality, it’s the one thing we as humans all share. And no matter what we do or how we live out our lives, eventually we will ALL be (as Lemmy so poetically put it) “killed by death” …and nobody has any idea “when” or “how” it will arrive. “Do you know how many Junes they lived through?” Over the course of our lifetime, we all bid farewell to the artists which have helped shape us as people, providing us with what would become the soundtrack to our lives. Many of our favorite artists passed away before we even became familiar with their work, and many have passed away so recently that we are still processing their loss from the perspective of our own lives and the impact that their lives and their art have had on us. “All you gotta do if you miss them is press play…” Having said that, we are not here to bemoan the losses we’ve experienced in the metal community so much as we are here to ask you to JOIN US as we CELEBRATE the legacy of those we have lost who have blessed our lives so richly with the timeless art they created that will forever transcend death. “I mean it’s June, so…” Released September 29, 1992, CORE, the debut album from San Diego, California’s own STONE TEMPLE PILOTS (or STP for short) is one of those albums that doesn’t really fit into the “grunge” category, nor does it fit into the traditional “heavy metal” box either. It’s certainly not grunge but is definitely “more metal than Pearl Jam”, and while there may be some subtle similarities here and there, they are as different as apples and apple sauce. “It’s June, man. Knock yourself out…” Of the STP discography, CORE is certainly their heaviest and most metal sounding album, offering a refreshing change to the musical landscape of the early 90’s with an alternative brand of metal filled with enough grunt and power to appeal to metal heads while simultaneously providing enough melody & hook to achieve the widespread popularity and mainstream crossover success that would lead to its 8x platinum sales status. Produced by Brendan O’Brien, a legendary name in the alternative metal scene during the 1990’s, CORE is “the heavier side of the ‘grunge’ thing”. You might say that STP’s CORE was “the next wave of metal that wasn’t Pantera…or thrash”. “We’ve only got 2 more weeks of June though…after June, you can’t do it.” Understand that “if you’re into naked Sundays you can look at everybody’s wicked garden” and enjoy a nice “piece of pie” in the process. And if you’re still trying to do the math to figure out what a trillionaire is, just remember that “a billion is a thousand million…a trillion is a thousand billion…” and when you have that much cash laying around, “it’s gonna be like Caligula…” when you JOIN US as we eat the apple all the way down to the seeds of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS’ transformative alternative metal debut, CORE. The year is 1980. The U.S. National Debt is a paltry $900 Billion, the word “yuppie” appears for the first time in print, the Pac-Man videogame is released in arcades everywhere, Mount St. Helens explodes in Washington state, and Cable News Network (also known as CNN) becomes a thing. In the world of metal, Iron Maiden release their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath reinvent themselves with new frontman Ronnie James Dio on vocals and release Heaven and Hell, and AC/DC regroup after the tragic loss of Bon Scott and release Back In Black featuring new vocalist Brian Johnson, an album that would go on to sell more than 40 million copies and become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Just as time and technology continued marching forward, the hard rock of the 70’s continued its evolution into a new direction with a faster, heavier, and more aggressive sound beginning in 1980 that would become even faster, heavier, and more aggressive throughout the 80’s. “I wanna hear THAT at my grocery store, when I’m going for the meat section…” Whether it’s the song we all rise for at sports ball events, the first song on Rush’s “Fly By Night” album (not to mention the first song on Anthrax’s EP of classic rock covers), or the sing-along, encore at the end of a rock show, ANTHEMS represent a clarion call, a rallying cry that unites fans in unspeakable joy, unity, and celebration. It’s almost always the song that EVERYONE knows (even your grandmother) and is very much NOT a deep cut. “AC/DC’s kind of an anthem band…they have at least one on every album…” In fact, ANTHEMS are those kinds of songs where, if you hear one in a public place: at a bar, a restaurant, the grocery store, or a friend’s party, you’re not going to NOT like it. Sure, it’s probably the most well-known, popular, played into the ground, mainstream “hit” that EVERYONE (again, probably even your grandmother) is familiar with, but no matter what song it is or where you might hear it, ANTHEMS are guaranteed to get you fired up, lift your spirit, and bring a smile to your face. “I wanna do a little birthday squig…” Find out what’s happening “THIS FRIDAY”, realize that birthdays are the anniversaries of life, and JOIN US for a Bunkerpoon birthday celebration full of cake, refreshments, and good cheer as we cuss and discuss the unifying power behind rock and metal ANTHEMS.
