THE ORIOLES JUST SWEPT THE METS, AND THEY DID IT WITH A FULL-ON HOME RUN PARTY ON NATIONAL TELEVISION. Baltimore blasted four homers in the first three innings, then added one final run in the ninth to finish a 7–1 statement win at Citi Field. Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Samuel Basallo went back-to-back in the third inning, Jeremiah Jackson crushed a two-run homer, and the Orioles poured it on early against Mets spot starter Xzavion Curry. Pete Alonso’s 301st career home run accounted for New York’s only run. Samuel Basallo wasn’t finished, either. After launching his 18th homer of the season, Basallo added an RBI single in the ninth inning to make it 7–1 and put an exclamation point on Baltimore’s Mets sweep. Chris Bassitt was everything the Orioles needed in a huge late-season game. He worked 6 2/3 innings, struck out six, allowed just one run, and earned his eighth win of the season. Baltimore’s offense went quiet after its early home-run barrage — until Basallo delivered one more clutch hit in the ninth. The Orioles are now 2.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox for the third American League Wild Card spot. With nine games remaining, Baltimore’s elimination number sits at eight. The road is tight, but the O’s are still fighting — and they just made a loud statement on ESPN.
