Candide – Voltaire

Candide follows a sheltered young man who is taught by his teacher Pangloss that everything happens for the best. Once forced out into the world, however, Candide encounters war, natural disaster, religious persecution, slavery, greed, betrayal, and repeated personal loss. His experiences gradually destroy his faith in easy philosophical optimism. Through fast-paced adventure and sharp satire, Voltaire criticizes blind optimism, hypocrisy, social inequality, religious intolerance, and the tendency to explain suffering rather than confront it. Characters such as Pangloss, the pessimistic Martin, the practical Cacambo, and Cunégonde help Candide see how differently people respond to an uncertain and often cruel world. By the end, Candide no longer searches for a perfect explanation of life. Instead, he embraces the practical idea of "cultivating our garden" — focusing on useful work, responsibility, and what human beings can actually improve. This combination of humor, philosophy, and social criticism has made Candide one of the enduring masterpieces of the Enlightenment.
