Spore Sized: The Giant Spring Polypore That Smells Like Watermelon
Polyporus squamosus, known as Dryad’s Saddle or Pheasant’s Back and often placed in Cerioporus, is one of the most distinctive large polypores of spring. Its broad, scaly cap can produce a surprising watermelon or cucumber-like scent, while its biology spans both living and dead hardwood.Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/cerioporus-squamosus-dryads-saddle/In this episode, two hosts examine its fan-shaped yellow-brown caps, dark scales, thick stem, broad angular pores and soft flesh when young. They explore its unusual ecological transition from parasite on living hardwoods such as elm, maple, ash and beech to a white-rot saprobe that continues decomposing the dead wood. The conversation then moves into chemistry and molecular biology, focusing on PSL, a highly specific lectin that recognizes 6′-sialylated structures on N-glycans and has applications in glycobiology. Research has also identified trehalose, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, β-tocopherol and polyunsaturated fatty acids, while laboratory studies have reported antioxidant, antibacterial, antibiofilm and antiquorum-sensing activity. The hosts carefully distinguish laboratory findings from proven health effects, field observations and the long tradition of harvesting young Dryad’s Saddle as a spring edible. The episode also considers its relationships with fungus beetles and its important role in forest decomposition. From its distinctive fragrance to its specialized lectin, Polyporus squamosus demonstrates how a familiar woodland mushroom can connect forest ecology, gastronomy and molecular research.Polyporus squamosus, Dryad’s Saddle, Pheasant’s Back, Cerioporus squamosus, watermelon mushroom, scaly polypore, spring mushrooms, white rot, hardwood fungi, polypore lectin, PSL lectin, glycobiology, N-glycans, mushroom chemistry, antibiofilm activity, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, fungal ecology, mycology#DryadsSaddle #PolyporusSquamosus #PheasantsBack #Cerioporus #Mycology #Fungi #Polypores #WhiteRot #MushroomIdentification #Glycobiology #MushroomChemistry #FungalEcology #SpringMushrooms #MycologyPodcast

Dryad’s Saddle: The Watermelon-Scented Polypore With a Remarkable Double Life
One of spring’s most recognizable large polypores can smell surprisingly like watermelon or cucumber. Polyporus squamosus, commonly called Dryad’s Saddle or Pheasant’s Back and often placed in Cerioporus, can begin life as a parasite of living hardwoods before continuing as a powerful white-rot decomposer after the host wood dies.Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/cerioporus-squamosus-dryads-saddle/In this episode, two hosts examine its large fan- or saddle-shaped yellow-brown caps, dark scales, short thick stem with its often-blackish base, and broad angular cream-colored pores. Young fruitbodies have soft flesh and have a long history as a spring edible, while older specimens rapidly become tough.Ecologically, the species is associated with hardwoods including elm, maple, ash and beech. It can fruit repeatedly from the same host and frequently appears in spring alongside morels. Its white-rot activity helps break down woody material and return nutrients to the forest ecosystem. The discussion then moves from forest ecology into molecular research. A particularly unusual feature is polyporin squamosus lectin, or PSL, whose remarkable specificity for Neu5Acα2,6Galβ1,4Glc/GlcNAc structures on N-glycans has made it valuable in glycobiological research. Chemical studies have also identified trehalose as a dominant free sugar, p-hydroxybenzoic acid among its notable phenolics, β-tocopherol, and a favorable polyunsaturated fatty-acid profile.Laboratory research has further reported antioxidant, antibacterial, antibiofilm and antiquorum-sensing activity, including effects involving Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These findings are laboratory observations, however, and should not be confused with established medical applications. The episode separates peer-reviewed chemistry and bioactivity research from field ecology and culinary tradition, providing a grounded look at a species that connects forest decomposition, food culture and glycobiology.Polyporus squamosus, Dryad’s Saddle, Pheasant’s Back, Cerioporus squamosus, watermelon mushroom, scaly polypore, white rot, polypore lectin, PSL lectin, glycobiology, N-glycans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, antibiofilm, mushroom chemistry, spring mushrooms, hardwood fungi, mycology#PolyporusSquamosus #DryadsSaddle #PheasantsBack #Cerioporus #Mycology #Polypores #Fungi #WhiteRot #MushroomChemistry #Glycobiology #MushroomIdentification #SpringMushrooms #FungalEcology #MycologyPodcast

Spore Sized: Why This Tiny Polypore Has a Fringed Edge
Most people would overlook Polyporus ciliatus, but its delicately hairy cap margin and fine pores make it one of the more distinctive small polypores of temperate forests.Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/fringed-polypore-polyporus-ciliatus/In this episode, two hosts explore the Fringed Polypore’s morphology, including its small brown to yellowish-brown cap, ciliate margin, pores typically measuring 5–7 per millimeter, slender stem, and tough fruitbodies. The discussion then examines its role as a saprobic white-rot fungus, primarily decomposing fallen hardwood such as beech, oak, and alder. The episode also covers its temperate distribution, mainly late-spring and summer fruiting, recent Japanese records, and cultural studies documenting chlamydospore production. Comparisons with the Winter Polypore and related Polyporus species highlight why seemingly subtle morphological differences matter. Finally, the hosts consider what remains unknown. While its morphology and ecology are increasingly well characterized, dedicated chemical and enzymatic research on P. ciliatus remains limited, leaving its secondary-metabolite biology largely unexplored.A quiet but distinctive fungus, Polyporus ciliatus demonstrates how tiny hairs, fine pores, and careful observation can reveal far more than its modest appearance suggests.Polyporus ciliatus, Fringed Polypore, Polyporus ciliatus identification, Fringed Polypore identification, Winter Polypore, Polyporus brumalis, fine-pored polypore, ciliate margin, white-rot fungus, hardwood decomposer, wood-rotting fungi, fungal ecology, mushroom identification, mycology#PolyporusCiliatus #FringedPolypore #Mycology #Fungi #Polypores #MushroomIdentification #WhiteRot #FungalEcology #WoodRottingFungi #MycologyPodcast

Meet the Fringed Polypore: A Small Mushroom With a Remarkable Edge
Polyporus ciliatus, the Fringed Polypore, is a small temperate wood-rotting fungus easily overlooked in the forest. Its minute hairs along the cap margin, combined with its fine, dense pores, help distinguish it from similar species such as the Winter Polypore.Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/fringed-polypore-polyporus-ciliatus/In this episode, two hosts examine its brown to yellowish-brown cap, ciliate margin, pores typically measuring around 5–7 per millimeter, slender stem, and tough, persistent fruitbodies. As a saprobic white-rot fungus, it primarily colonizes fallen hardwood, particularly beech, oak, and alder, fruiting mainly in late spring and summer across temperate regions. The discussion also explores Japanese records and cultural studies documenting chlamydospore production, while considering ongoing taxonomic refinement among related Polyporus species. The hosts distinguish reliable field characters from microscopic and cultural observations, while noting that the chemistry and secondary metabolites of P. ciliatus remain comparatively poorly studied.Quietly distinctive rather than showy, Polyporus ciliatus rewards close inspection: a finely fringed, small-pored decomposer whose biology still leaves plenty to discover.Polyporus ciliatus, Fringed Polypore, Polyporus identification, Winter Polypore, Polyporus brumalis, polypores, white-rot fungi, hardwood fungi, wood-rotting fungi, fungal ecology, mycology, mushroom identification, chlamydospores#PolyporusCiliatus #FringedPolypore #Mycology #Fungi #Polypores #MushroomIdentification #WhiteRot #FungalEcology #WoodRottingFungi #MycologyPodcast

Spore Sized: How This Winter Polypore Attacks Dead Wood
The Winter Polypore (Polyporus brumalis) is a cold-season wood decomposer with an unusually sophisticated oxidative enzyme system. Growing primarily on dead hardwoods such as birch, it produces persistent, leathery fruitbodies that can survive through winter.Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/polyporus-brumalis-winter-polypore/Two hosts examine the species' expanded arsenal of lignin-degrading peroxidases, including manganese and versatile peroxidases, along with oxidoreductases involved in supplying the hydrogen peroxide required for oxidative wood decay. Multi-omics research suggests these systems contribute to its ability to efficiently delignify complex plant biomass. The episode also explores its unusual secondary metabolism. Under laboratory conditions, P. brumalis has been shown to produce the eudesmane sesquiterpenes β-eudesmane and β-eudesmol, with transcriptomic evidence pointing toward increased activity in terpene-biosynthesis pathways. Its ability to degrade dibutyl phthalate adds another intriguing dimension to its potential biotechnological relevance. The result is a close look at a seemingly modest winter polypore whose cold-season ecology, powerful wood-degrading enzymes and specialized chemistry make it an unusually interesting fungus for modern mycology.Polyporus brumalis, Winter Polypore, Lentinus brumalis, lignin degradation, fungal enzymes, white rot, β-eudesmol, eudesmane, biomass conversion, fungal biotechnology#PolyporusBrumalis #WinterPolypore #Mycology #LigninDegradation #FungalEnzymes #WhiteRotFungi #FungalBiotechnology #Eudesmol #Eudesmane #WoodRotFungi #Polypore #FungalChemistry #MycologyPodcast

Polyporus brumalis: The Winter Fungus Built for Breaking Down Wood
While many familiar polypores appear primarily during the warmer months, Polyporus brumalis, now often treated within Lentinus, is adapted to the cold season. Its persistent, leathery fruitbodies can remain on dead hardwood for long periods, with fresh growth particularly associated with late autumn through spring.Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/polyporus-brumalis-winter-polypore/In this episode, two hosts take a focused look at the Winter Polypore, examining its small circular brown to grayish cap, tiny white pores and tough central or slightly eccentric stem. The hosts explore how its morphology and persistent fruitbodies allow it to remain visible through conditions in which many other fungi have become inactive. The ecological story is even more interesting. P. brumalis is a white-rot saprobe, specializing in dead woody material and showing a particular association with hardwoods such as birch, while also occurring on beech and other hosts. Its Northern Hemisphere distribution spans temperate and boreal environments. The centerpiece of the episode is its unusual lignin-degrading enzyme system. Multi-omics research has revealed an expanded collection of Class II peroxidases, including versatile and manganese peroxidases, together with GMC oxidoreductases capable of supplying hydrogen peroxide for oxidative lignin degradation. These systems help explain the fungus's ability to attack complex plant biomass and have attracted interest for applications such as biomass delignification and wheat-straw processing. The hosts then turn to secondary metabolism. Under particular laboratory conditions, P. brumalis can produce the eudesmane-type sesquiterpenes β-eudesmane and β-eudesmol. Transcriptomic research has linked their production with changes in genes associated with the mevalonate pathway and terpene biosynthesis. The fungus has also demonstrated an ability to degrade dibutyl phthalate, adding another dimension to research into its potential environmental and biotechnological capabilities.Along the way, the episode explores unusual aspects of its biology, including the changing orientation of the developing fruitbody—from early phototropic growth of the stipe to pronounced geotropic behavior as the cap expands—and melanin production under high-moisture conditions.Throughout, the hosts distinguish between genomic predictions, laboratory enzyme experiments, metabolite analyses and observations made in natural habitats.Polyporus brumalis ultimately illustrates how a relatively inconspicuous winter mushroom can possess an unexpectedly sophisticated biochemical toolkit—one that continues to interest researchers studying fungal ecology, wood decomposition and sustainable methods for processing plant biomass.Polyporus brumalis, Lentinus brumalis, Winter Polypore, winter mushroom, polypore fungi, lignin degrading fungi, lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase, versatile peroxidase, white rot fungi, wood decomposition, fungal enzymes, biomass delignification, wheat straw, eudesmane sesquiterpenes, beta eudesmane, beta eudesmol, fungal biotechnology, fungal secondary metabolites, dibutyl phthalate degradation, mycology#PolyporusBrumalis #WinterPolypore #LentinusBrumalis #Mycology #WhiteRotFungi #LigninDegradation #FungalEnzymes #Polypore #WoodRotFungi #FungalBiotechnology #Eudesmane #BetaEudesmol #BiomassConversion #FungalChemistry #MycologyPodcast

Meet the Ghost Shield: A Rare Mushroom Hidden in European Forests
Most deer mushrooms in the genus Pluteus are associated with brown or gray caps, but Pluteus pellitus, commonly known as the Ghost Shield, takes a strikingly different form. Its pale white to creamy fruitbodies can stand out dramatically against dark, decomposing hardwood, yet this uncommon European species is far more subtle than its appearance suggests.Dive deeper on the blog: https://lichenthevibe.com/pluteus-pellitus-ghost-shield/In this episode, two hosts take a close look at Pluteus pellitus, examining its whitish cap, faintly darker center, free gills that mature from white to pink, and slender white fibrillose stem. The discussion explores where it grows, particularly on decaying hardwood stumps, logs and buried woody debris, and why its distribution across temperate Europe makes it a species worth recognizing carefully. The episode then moves from the forest floor to the microscope, where identification becomes much more precise. Metuloid pleurocystidia with two to four apical hooks or prongs provide one of the species' most distinctive microscopic characters. The presence of clamp connections in the pileipellis hyphae adds another important diagnostic feature, helping distinguish P. pellitus from visually similar pale Pluteus species. The hosts also examine its place within the continuing taxonomic study of the deer-mushroom group, including the challenge of separating closely related pale species such as Pluteus petasatus and the North American P. nothopellitus. Molecular research continues to refine these boundaries, showing why appearance alone can sometimes be misleading in fungal identification.Chemically, however, P. pellitus remains almost a blank page. Unlike some better-studied Pluteus species, it has received essentially no dedicated investigation of its secondary metabolites, leaving its specialized chemistry largely unknown. The result is a fascinating contrast: a mushroom that is visually distinctive but chemically understudied, and microscopically recognizable only through characters that most people would never see in the field. Keywords: Pluteus pellitus, Ghost Shield, Ghost Shield mushroom, white Pluteus, pale mushroom, European mushrooms, Pluteus identification, Pluteus taxonomy, metuloid cystidia, hooked cystidia, pleurocystidia, clamp connections, pink spore mushroom, free gills, hardwood decomposer, wood rot fungi, saprobic fungi, European mycology, mushroom microscopy, fungal taxonomy, mushroom identification#PluteusPellitus #GhostShield #Mycology #MushroomIdentification #FungalTaxonomy #MushroomScience #EuropeanMushrooms #Cystidia #Pleurocystidia #MushroomMicroscopy #FungalEcology #WoodRotFungi #SaprobicFungi #MushroomBiodiversity #MycologyPodcast
