Baptism is an important act of obedience that Jesus commanded for every believer and follower of Him. The biblical pattern is for people to believe in Jesus first and then be baptized, rather than being baptized as a means of salvation. Baptism is by immersion, symbolizing a believer’s identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection and their commitment to live a new life. Baptism publicly identifies a person with Jesus and His church, much like a wedding ring publicly represents a marriage. Scripture shows that believers were baptized immediately after putting their faith in Christ, without unnecessary delays or requirements. Since baptism does not save us but demonstrates our faith and obedience, every person who has truly trusted Jesus should boldly follow His command and be baptized.
