Are you building a profitable business—or simply working harder to keep it running? Understanding your numbers, managing cash flow, and making smarter financial decisions could be the difference between surviving and thriving as an entrepreneur. According to First Citizens Wealth's 2025 Beyond Wealth Report for Business Owners, more than half of surveyed business owners are experiencing financial stress, with 63% identifying inflation as a major concern. Rising interest rates, economic uncertainty, and shifting government policies are making financial confidence more important than ever. But despite these challenges, entrepreneurs continue to pursue growth, build wealth, and create opportunities for the future. On this episode of Let's Have This Conversation, host Kevin McShan welcomes Courtney Hill, entrepreneur, property investor, and founder of Hill Bookkeepers, a UK-based bookkeeping and financial management firm dedicated to helping business owners gain clarity, confidence, and control over their finances. Courtney has built Hill Bookkeepers from the ground up, growing it into a team of financial professionals supporting businesses across multiple industries. Alongside her bookkeeping firm, she is building her own property investment business, gaining firsthand experience in serviced accommodation, short-term rentals, and real estate entrepreneurship. Having navigated the challenges of building and managing multiple businesses, Courtney understands that sustainable success requires more than generating revenue. It demands financial discipline, strategic decision-making, resilience, and a clear understanding of where your money is going. In this conversation, we explore: Whether you're launching your first business, managing an established company, exploring property investment, or looking to improve your financial literacy, this episode offers valuable perspectives on building a business with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose. According to Inc.com, approximately 15% to 25% of business owners actively prioritize or pursue acquiring a second business as a strategy for expansion and long-term growth. Meanwhile, data attributed to the U.S. Census Bureau and the SBA Office of Advocacy suggests that approximately 22% of American employer business owners purchased an existing business, compared to roughly 67% who started their businesses from scratch. The remaining owners acquired their businesses through inheritance, gifts, or other means. These statistics raise an important question: Why do so many aspiring entrepreneurs focus on starting a business from scratch when buying an established, cash-flowing business could provide another pathway to financial independence and long-term wealth creation? This week on Let's Have This Conversation, host Kevin McShan welcomes Corey Parchman, a former NFL wide receiver, real estate developer, entrepreneur, and founder and CEO of CorePar Holdings, an Indianapolis-based buy-and-build investment platform focused on acquiring essential business-to-business (B2B) service companies throughout Indiana. Having built multiple businesses from the ground up, including a real estate development company and an all-boys preschool, Parchman understands the challenges of entrepreneurship firsthand. His experience on both sides of business ownership has shaped his belief that buying an existing business can offer significant advantages over launching a startup, particularly when it comes to established customers, operational infrastructure, and recurring revenue. As the author of Already Built, a practical guide to business acquisition for the next generation of entrepreneurs, Parchman is working to make business ownership through acquisition a more accessible wealth-building strategy, especially for individuals who may never have considered purchasing an existing company. Throughout this engaging conversation, McShan and Parchman explore the fundamentals of buying a small business, evaluating real cash flow, conducting business acquisition due diligence, and understanding SBA 7(a) financing. They also discuss how Parchman's experience as a professional athlete influenced his approach to entrepreneurship, leadership, calculated risk-taking, and building sustainable businesses. Whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur, small business owner, investor, or professional exploring alternative paths to financial freedom, this episode offers practical insights into entrepreneurship through acquisition (ETA), small business investing, business valuation, acquisition financing, and long-term wealth creation. The central question: What if the business you've always dreamed of owning has already been built—and is simply waiting for its next owner? Join Kevin McShan and Corey Parchman for a thought-provoking conversation about reimagining entrepreneurship, creating opportunities through business acquisitions, and understanding what it takes to transition from aspiring entrepreneur to successful business owner. What if the experience you've gained throughout your career could become the foundation of a successful coaching business—even without traditional coaching credentials? The professional coaching industry continues to experience significant growth, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs, business leaders, and professionals looking to transform their knowledge into meaningful impact. According to Business Wire, the broader U.S. professional coaching industry is valued at approximately $16 billion, having more than doubled since 2016. Meanwhile, research cited by the International Association of Career Coaches suggests that approximately 75% of coaching clients expect professional certification. This raises an interesting question: Can real-world experience, practical expertise, and a genuine commitment to helping others provide an alternative pathway into the coaching profession? For aspiring coaches, the challenge isn't simply acquiring credentials or attracting clients. It's discovering how to build a sustainable business that reflects their expertise, personal values, and long-term vision. Adam Roach is a coach, speaker, entrepreneur, and host of the I Love Coaching podcast. As the founder of I Love Coaching Co, Adam helps aspiring and established coaches build and scale businesses that reflect their unique experiences rather than following someone else's blueprint. Through the ILC Collective and his proprietary REAL Coach Method™, Adam equips growth-oriented coaches with practical strategies to develop compelling offers, identify their ideal audiences, and create businesses rooted in authenticity, ownership, and alignment. His ambitious mission is to empower 100 million lives through coaching, helping individuals recognize the value of their experiences and translate that knowledge into opportunities to serve others. Before entering the coaching industry, Adam built real estate franchises, coached tennis, and successfully sold a company. Those experiences helped shape his belief that meaningful success isn't about replicating someone else's achievements. It's about creating a business and lifestyle that genuinely fit the person behind them. Today, Adam combines his entrepreneurial experience with a passion for leadership, personal development, and helping others pursue purposeful growth. He lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, with his wife, Dana. This week on Let's Have This Conversation, Adam joins host Kevin McShan to explore how individuals can transform their professional experience into a thriving coaching business without necessarily following the traditional credentialing pathway. Throughout our conversation, we discuss the importance of aligning your expertise with your audience, developing confidence in the value you offer, overcoming limiting beliefs, and creating a business that supports both professional success and personal fulfillment. We also examine the evolving coaching industry, the relationship between credentials and credibility, and why building a successful coaching practice requires more than simply having valuable knowledge—it demands clarity, conviction, authentic relationships, and consistent execution. Whether you're an experienced executive considering a career transition, an entrepreneur looking to diversify your income, or an aspiring coach searching for a meaningful starting point, this conversation offers practical insights into building a business around what you already know. Because sometimes the most valuable qualification you possess isn't a certificate on the wall—it's the experience you've accumulated, the challenges you've overcome, and your ability to help someone else move forward. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation about entrepreneurship, leadership, coaching, and creating success on your own terms. What if happiness wasn't simply a personal pursuit, but a collective responsibility shaped by the policies, institutions, and communities we build? Drawing on Gallup World Poll data from more than 160 countries, the World Happiness Report consistently ranks Nordic nations among the happiest in the world, highlighting the importance of social trust, strong public services, economic security, and supportive communities. Meanwhile, the global wellness economy reached $6.8 trillion in 2024, representing approximately 6.12% of global GDP, and is projected to grow to $9.8 trillion by 2029, according to the Global Wellness Institute. These developments raise a compelling question: If happiness and wellbeing are becoming increasingly important measures of societal progress, how can governments, organizations, and individuals move beyond simply measuring happiness to creating the conditions that allow people to flourish? Dr. Mark Fabian is an Associate Professor of Public Policy at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, an affiliate researcher at the Bennett Institute for Public Policy at the University of Cambridge, and an associate at the Institute for Social Change at the University of Tasmania. He previously served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. An interdisciplinary researcher, author, and thought leader, Fabian has dedicated his academic career to exploring the relationship between human wellbeing, happiness, public policy, philosophy, psychology, and the institutions that shape our everyday lives. His research challenges conventional assumptions about what it means to live a good life. Rather than treating happiness as a fleeting emotional state or an individual achievement, Fabian examines how wellbeing can be understood, measured, and meaningfully incorporated into public policy decisions. His scholarship has appeared in leading academic publications, including Perspectives on Psychological Science, Journal of European Public Policy, European Journal for Philosophy of Science, Fiscal Studies, and Journal of Happiness Studies. Through philosophical inquiry, quantitative analysis, and qualitative research, he explores how governments can make better decisions by considering not only economic productivity and financial prosperity but also human dignity, meaningful relationships, personal fulfilment, and quality of life. Fabian is also the host of ePODstemology, a podcast dedicated to intellectually stimulating conversations with researchers and thinkers exploring ideas at the frontiers of knowledge. From data governance and cultural transformation to emerging philosophical perspectives and scientific discoveries, the podcast creates opportunities for curious minds to challenge established thinking, embrace intellectual diversity, and engage with ideas that reshape our understanding of the world. In this week's episode of Let's Have This Conversation, Dr. Fabian joins me to explore the evolving science of happiness, the relationship between individual fulfilment and collective prosperity, and the responsibility governments have to create environments where people can thrive. We also discuss the limitations of traditional economic measures of success, the importance of interdisciplinary thinking, and how public policy can become a powerful instrument for improving quality of life. At the heart of our conversation is a fundamental question: Are we building societies that simply generate greater wealth, or are we creating communities that give more people the opportunity to live meaningful, fulfilling, and flourishing lives? Because perhaps the greatest measure of a successful society isn't simply how much wealth it creates, but how effectively it empowers people to experience dignity, belonging, opportunity, and purpose. What happens when we challenge the assumptions we've accepted as truth? And how can investigative journalism help us uncover overlooked stories, question conventional wisdom, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around us? According to the Pew Research Center, 59% of Americans believe journalists are extremely or very important to society's well-being, highlighting the essential role journalism plays in informing the public, encouraging accountability, and fostering meaningful conversations. But in an increasingly complex media landscape, journalism must do more than simply report the facts. It must challenge established narratives, uncover hidden perspectives, and encourage audiences to reconsider what they think they know. This week on Let's Have This Conversation, host Kevin McShan welcomes Steve Hendershot, an award-winning investigative journalist, bestselling author, and creator and host of Uningrained, a documentary-style podcast dedicated to investigating blind spots, invisible ideas, and deeply rooted assumptions. With more than two decades of experience in journalism and storytelling, Steve has built a career exploring fascinating subjects and translating complex ideas into compelling narratives. His work includes authoring a bestselling book about the iconic Street Fighter video game franchise and hosting the Project Management Institute's podcast for many years. Now, through Uningrained, Steve is pursuing a journalistic vision 20 years in the making: examining the ideas society takes for granted and asking whether those assumptions withstand closer scrutiny. The podcast's inaugural season explores a deceptively simple question: Why is softball considered baseball for girls? Through investigative reporting and documentary storytelling, Steve examines the cultural assumptions, historical influences, and societal expectations surrounding two closely related sports. Throughout this engaging conversation, Kevin and Steve explore the importance of independent journalism, intellectual curiosity, challenging conventional wisdom, and creating compelling stories that inspire audiences to think critically. They also discuss the evolution of podcasting, the responsibilities of modern journalists, and why asking better questions can sometimes be more powerful than having all the answers. Because meaningful journalism isn't simply about telling people what to think. It's about giving them the information, context, and curiosity to think for themselves. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation about investigative journalism, storytelling, media accountability, and the courage to question what we've always believed. The independent creator economy is transforming how Americans consume media, entertainment, news, and digital content. As traditional publishing, entertainment, and social media business models continue to evolve, independent creators are searching for greater ownership, financial independence, and meaningful connections with their audiences. Research highlights the growing influence of creator-led communities. According to statistics published by Bizkol, 71% of consumers trust recommendations from creators they follow more than traditional brand advertisements. Meanwhile, Morning Consult research suggests that 26% of Americans say independent creator content has influenced their voting decisions. Additionally, Pew Research Center reports that 50% of U.S. social media users consider online platforms important for connecting with like-minded individuals. These findings raise an important question: If independent creators have the power to influence consumer behavior, shape public conversations, and build thriving digital communities, why do so many struggle to earn sustainable income from their creative work? This week on Let's Have This Conversation, host Kevin McShan welcomes Zack James, founder, CEO, and lead developer of StarScript, a Los Angeles-based self-publishing platform and creative network designed to empower independent content creators. Co-founded alongside his brother Matthew, StarScript combines elements of Netflix-style streaming, LinkedIn-style networking, social media engagement, and IMDb-style ratings into one integrated creative ecosystem. Launched in 2023, StarScript is challenging traditional entertainment industry models by giving creators opportunities to publish, promote, monetize, and build communities around their work. With the introduction of its Productions feature in spring 2026, the platform supports seven creative formats: books, comics, music, podcasts, film, television, and art. Today, StarScript reports a growing community of more than 2,800 creators, with approximately 125 new members joining each month. Its membership model allows creators to retain 95% of their membership revenue. But Zack believes the challenges facing independent creators extend far beyond monetization. In an increasingly saturated digital marketplace, creators are expected to be entrepreneurs, marketers, producers, publishers, and community builders simultaneously. Fragmented audiences, unpredictable algorithms, limited resources, and traditional industry gatekeepers make building a sustainable creative career increasingly complicated. Zack argues that the future of independent content creation depends on something more powerful than individual talent: an ecosystem built around collaboration, creative ownership, economic opportunity, and genuine community support. During this conversation, Kevin and Zack explore the evolving creator economy, the importance of self-publishing, the financial realities of independent content creation, the role of artificial intelligence in creative industries, and how stronger creator communities could redefine the future of entertainment. Can independent creators build sustainable businesses without sacrificing ownership of their work? How can digital platforms balance profitability with empowering the people responsible for creating their content? And could the next generation of successful media companies be built around collaboration rather than traditional industry gatekeeping? Join us for an insightful conversation about the future of the creator economy, digital entrepreneurship, independent publishing, creative freedom, and the power of community to transform how stories are created, shared, and monetized. Because the future of content creation may not simply depend on who produces the most content, but on who builds the strongest communities around it. Can artificial intelligence and automation help businesses grow without sacrificing the human judgment, communication, and personal connections that drive long-term success? As artificial intelligence continues to transform the American business landscape, organizations of all sizes are discovering new opportunities to improve efficiency, increase revenue, and streamline daily operations. According to figures attributed to Zapier, AI and software integration among U.S. organizations reached 47% in the second quarter of 2026, while an estimated 57% of American work hours could technically be automated using existing technologies. Meanwhile, research attributed to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce suggests that 90% of small and medium-sized businesses using AI report improved operational efficiency, while 91% experience revenue benefits. Yet adoption remains uneven. Figures attributed to McKinsey & Company suggest that larger enterprises are integrating AI at significantly higher rates than businesses with four or fewer employees. With technological innovation accelerating, an important question emerges: How can business leaders embrace AI and automation while maintaining the accountability, human connection, and strategic decision-making necessary for sustainable growth? This week on Let's Have This Conversation, host Kevin McShan welcomes Ray Hodjat, Co-Founder of Pronto Solutions, for an insightful discussion about the intersection of artificial intelligence, business automation, digital marketing, customer engagement, and organizational growth. Built around the philosophy "Build. Attract. Convert. Grow.", Pronto Solutions helps businesses simplify their technology infrastructure by bringing AI-powered software, automation, marketing, customer relationship management, and business development tools into one coordinated ecosystem. Rather than forcing entrepreneurs and business leaders to navigate disconnected websites, applications, CRMs, marketing agencies, communication platforms, and automation services, Pronto Solutions focuses on creating integrated systems that allow organizations to operate more efficiently and scale with greater confidence. Throughout this conversation, Ray explores the challenges businesses encounter when adopting emerging technologies, the importance of connecting software systems, and how AI can empower organizations to work smarter without diminishing the value of human expertise. Together, we examine how entrepreneurs can leverage automation to reduce operational complexity, strengthen customer relationships, improve productivity, and create sustainable opportunities for business growth. Because ultimately, the future of business isn't simply about adopting more technology. It's about using technology intentionally to help people, teams, and organizations achieve more. Whether you're a small business owner, entrepreneur, executive, marketing professional, or organizational leader navigating digital transformation, this conversation offers valuable perspectives on building a more efficient, connected, and future-ready business. Join us as we explore how AI, automation, and human-centered leadership can work together to transform the future of business. Is Hollywood truly embracing diversity and inclusion, or are we witnessing a retreat from meaningful representation both on screen and behind the camera? Despite progress in recent years, significant disparities remain in the American film industry. According to the 2026 UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report, Hollywood has experienced what researchers describe as a “relapse into colorblind complacency,” raising important questions about the industry's commitment to authentic representation, equitable opportunities, and inclusive storytelling. But what happens when filmmakers intentionally challenge these barriers and create stories that celebrate the experiences, talents, and aspirations of people too often overlooked? Laurence Walsh-Hodson is a writer, director, and producer with 25 years of experience in film and television. She is also the founder of Acer Entertainment, a nonprofit production company dedicated to creating inclusive, uplifting stories that inspire audiences, challenge perceptions, and promote healing. Her latest feature film, Ballroom, brings that mission to life. The film follows a young wheelchair dancer pursuing her dream of becoming a professional performer. Through authentic casting of actors with disabilities, Ballroom explores perseverance, self-love, resilience, and the transformative power of dance. For Laurence, storytelling is about more than entertainment. It's about recognizing our shared humanity, celebrating possibilities, and reminding audiences that life's challenges do not have to define the limits of our potential. How can authentic representation in filmmaking challenge societal perceptions of disability and create greater opportunities for inclusion, both in front of and behind the camera? This week on Let's Have This Conversation, Laurence joins me for an inspiring discussion about inclusive filmmaking, the power of authentic storytelling, and why everyone deserves the opportunity to see their experiences represented on screen.
