Hosted by Noah Preminger, this episode of the Jazz Language podcast features a conversation with saxophonist, flautist, and composer Ken Field. A computer science student at Brown University before training at Berklee College of Music and studying privately with saxophonist Joe Viola, Field leads the New Orleans–rooted Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and the loop-based electroacoustic project beams. In this episode, Noah and Ken discuss his path from computer science to music, how a broken tooth led him to the flute, keeping New Orleans brass band traditions alive through improvisation, the contrast between the New York and Boston jazz scenes, building bands over touring, the art of directing and letting go as a bandleader, and other projects such as Armenian-American ensemble Musaner, and serving as the President of JazzBoston.
