Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I take a deeper look at some of the conventional ideas we’ve been taught about nutrition, carbohydrates, vegetables, meat, and metabolic health. We discuss what happens when we begin questioning the standard advice around what a healthy diet should look like, including the role of carbohydrates and insulin, the potential impact of constantly elevated glucose and insulin, and the debate surrounding plant-based versus animal-based nutrition. We also explore the importance of nutrient absorption, gut health, and metabolic health, and why sometimes the biggest changes in our health begin when we’re willing to question what we’ve always been told. Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I sit down with cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Philip Ovadia to challenge some of the conventional thinking around heart disease, cholesterol, nutrition, and metabolic health. After becoming morbidly obese and pre-diabetic himself despite being a heart surgeon, Dr. Ovadia began questioning the advice he had been giving patients and ultimately transformed his own health through a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic approach. We discuss why insulin resistance may be a much bigger factor in heart disease than cholesterol alone, the role of inflammation and metabolic health, and why Dr. Ovadia has completely changed his views on dietary fat, meat, and plant-based diets. Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Bret Scher. He is a board-certified cardiologist, lipidologist, and leading expert in therapeutic uses of metabolic therapies, including ketogenic diets. We discuss Dr. Scher’s journey from conventional cardiology to ketogenic medicine, the connection between insulin resistance and cardiovascular health, and why looking only at LDL cholesterol may not tell the whole story. We explore triglyceride-to-HDL ratios, fasting insulin, blood sugar, calcium scores, CT angiography, and the complex relationship between ketogenic diets and rising LDL. Finally, we discuss ketogenic therapy and mental health, metabolic flexibility, and what endurance athletes can learn about nutrition and avoiding the dreaded “bonk.” Thanks as always for listening. Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I discuss the importance of recognizing potentially serious heart symptoms in runners and endurance athletes, using the story of a young runner who died unexpectedly after experiencing repeated episodes of severe palpitations. We talk about why symptoms like sudden palpitations, chest pain, and unusually high heart rates should not simply be dismissed as dehydration or anxiety, why it's important to rule out serious cardiac conditions first, and how athletes can pay closer attention to their heart rate and warning signs during exercise. I also share an update on my ketogenic diet and my experience tracking glucose and ketones, including how exercise, insulin, carbohydrate intake, and dietary fat can affect ketone levels, why endurance athletes may use ketones faster than they produce them, and why patience and personal data are important when transitioning to a ketogenic diet. Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I’m breaking down my experience completing the Badger 100, a 100-mile ultramarathon through Wisconsin, and spoiler alert: I made it! There were many difficulties like running through the rain, dealing with blisters and back pain, figuring out how to fuel myself while keeping carbs low, and what my continuous glucose monitor showed along the way. I’ll share some of the lessons I learned about endurance, recovery, metabolic health, and what works for me after more than 33 hours on the course. I hope you enjoy the episode! Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Tro Kalayjian, a physician who has dedicated his career to helping people understand obesity, food addiction, and metabolic health. Dr. Tro shares his own journey with obesity, including losing more than 150 pounds after years of struggling with weight and following conventional approaches to nutrition. We discuss insulin resistance, low carbohydrate nutrition, intermittent fasting, food addiction, binge eating, and the ways shame and guilt can make weight loss even more difficult. We also explore the complex relationship between ketogenic diets, cholesterol, and metabolic health, and why individualized care and continued research are so important. Welcome! And thank you for listening. Diabetes has shaped my life long before I became a cardiologist. After watching multiple family members suffer from its complications, I was determined to avoid the same fate. Despite years of endurance training and following a whole food plant-based diet, I began noticing the signs of insulin resistance in my own body. In this episode, I share why I made the decision to transition to a low carbohydrate, high saturated fat approach and the lessons I've learned along the way. This is just the beginning of my journey, and I'll be sharing my progress, setbacks, and what I learn as I work toward reversing insulin resistance and improving my metabolic health. Welcome! And thank you for listening. One of the biggest barriers to lasting change is that every dietary pattern asks us to give something up. Whether it is processed carbohydrates, sweets, or other comfort foods, we have to replace the pleasure they once provided with something that better aligns with our long-term goals. Understanding your "why" is essential to creating lasting change. For me, that means improving insulin resistance, lowering inflammation, and helping people regain metabolic flexibility so their bodies can efficiently use stored fat for energy. In this episode, I discuss how dopamine influences cravings, why insulin resistance makes weight loss so difficult for many people, and why constantly eating and snacking can keep us trapped in a cycle of elevated glucose and insulin. I also share why I believe nutrition should always be individualized and why education, community, and support are critical for creating lasting change. If you would like to join us.
