Bryan Kohberger says his own defense team told him to lie. That accusation sits at the center of the petition he filed to undo his guilty plea in the Idaho student murders, and it is his claim, not a finding by any court. In documents filed in Ada County District Court, he alleges ineffective assistance of counsel, alleges he was convinced to falsely confess, and alleges he was promised a legal victory in exchange for a plea that did not have to be truthful. His attorneys have declined to comment.Tony Brueski is joined by psychotherapist Shavaun Scott for a conversation that skips the motion practice and goes at the person filing it. Scott has spent decades in private practice, community mental health, crisis teams, and forensic programs, which makes her the right person for the question nobody in the news coverage is asking. That question is whether the man writing these documents believes them.Because there are two versions of this. In one, he is running a calculated play, testing whether a self-represented filing can pry open a case he closed himself. In the other, something genuinely reorganized during twelve months in a maximum security cell, and the file in his head no longer matches the transcript. The episode also works through the language. Myopic narrative. Work of fiction. Justice circumnavigated. A criminology doctorate applied to his own murder conviction, in vocabulary that seems designed to be quoted. There is also the question of what the writing itself is for. Very few people file a self-represented petition and simultaneously place a call to a national newspaper unless some part of the goal is an audience. Scott's read on that is not the obvious one, and it complicates the easy answer that all of this is pure calculation.Listen to the full conversation, and follow Hidden Killers Live for more.LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
