She holds a B.S. in plant and soil science from the University of Vermont and an M.A in Appalachian Studies and Sustainability from Appalachian State University. She lives in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where she resides in a small community and teaches foraging, along with Appalachian folk medicine and crafts. She specializes in historical Appalachian ethnobotany and Appalachian folk medicine.
