As climate disasters increasingly play out across the country, who's responsible for footing the massive bills of recovery and preparing communities for future extreme events? That question is central to a lawsuit brought by the county and city of Boulder against Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil. The lawsuit, filed in 2018, seeks to hold the companies accountable for the cost of climate damages that have been fueled by their deception. Now, Suncor and ExxonMobil are asking the US Supreme Court to dismiss the case. To help us understand what's at stake, we're joined by Mike Meno, communications director at the Center for Climate Integrity. We'll talk about the issues being considered, what the court's decision could mean for other big oil liability cases, and what health professionals need to know as the case moves forward.
