In the wide, exposed emptiness of Montana, the danger isn’t always what you can see. For centuries, tribes across the plains told stories about something that didn’t hunt like a wolf… and didn’t sound like anything that belonged in the natural world. They called it the Shunka Warak’in—the thing that carries off dogs. Then in 1886, a rancher shot something that matched those stories. And today, that creature still exists. Mounted. Preserved.
