Kelly Fletcher, of Fellenn, returns this week. We first talked to her Sept. 22, 2019. The show is sponsored by Avlea Folk Embroidery at avleafolkembroidery.com. Kelly has made major changes to her business in the seven years since we first talked with her. We have much to explore on that front and we’ll do that in December. This time our focus is on her three books, 150 Embroidery Stitches; Embroidery Tips, Tricks & Techniques; and Stitch Samplers. Together these three books are an excellent resource for experienced stitchers and terrific tools for beginners. We spend the bulk of our time in this show talking about the new 2026 Embroiderer’s Directory. This pdf download is a tremendous global resource that will help you find all types of needlework designers, teachers, and information/product providers from all corners of the globe. The Directory is something you want to have loaded on your devices. We hope you enjoy the show and encourage you to support Kelly’s efforts by purchasing her books and/or the Embroiderer’s Directory.—Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video Here are some links: Avlea Folk Embroidery website Kelly Fletcher’s first show Kelly Fletcher’s Fellenn website Kelly Fletcher on Instagram Embroiderer’s Directory on Instagram We hope you enjoy this week’s conversation with Kelly Fletcher. Cindy and Gary recorded a show this week with Yvette Stanton (vettycreations.com.au) that will be posted for Patreon members soon and in a couple of weeks for everyone else. During the discussion, we learned she’ll be speaking at the Drawn Threads and Running Stitches conference, Nov. 12 and 13 at the Ulster Folk Museum in County Down, Northern Ireland. No doubt your first reaction is, “I’d like to hear that presentation but my private jet is being serviced those two days so I can’t make the trip.” We have good news for you. You can hear Yvette’s presentation online for a rather nominal fee. There is no indication that the talks are recorded so those of us in the U.S. will have to get up rather early, but the opportunity is there. Yvette speaks on Friday, Nov. 13 at 11:40 a.m. (U.S. times: 6:40 a.m. Eastern, 5:40 a.m. Central, 4:40 a.m. Mountain, 3:40 a.m. Pacific). Yvette’s topic is Fries Witwerk: Identifying the Characteristics of Frisian Whitework Embroidery. To further entice you, also speaking on Friday are Isabella Rosner (“To revive a beautiful art”: The Royal School of Needlework’s History, Collection, and Work) at 10:05 a.m. UK time, and Tricia Nguyen (Stitching Logic: Whitework Samplers as Sites of Constructionist Pedagogy, c. 1618–1670) at 11:00 a.m. UK time. There are several other speakers in the two-day program, but those three are people we’ve interviewed. UPDATE: Beth had information from Tricia Nguyen that all of the presentations will be recorded and available to attendees (including online) for two weeks so you don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn/middle of the night. The URL for the conference, which will show you the entire program, is: https://www.ulsterfolkmuseum.org/whats-on/drawn-threads-and-running-stitches. Single-day online tickets are approximately $15. Online, two-day tickets are approx. $20. These prices are based on adding a voluntary donation to the museum. Please do that. Museums around the world need as much financial help as they can get. IMPORTANT: Ticket sales end at noon Eastern, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Clara Warschauer is offering a new class in collaboration with Ecclesiastical Sewing. The class is this pomegranate design that is made into a stocking. If you’ve taken a class with Clara, you likely don’t need to be convinced to take another class. If you’ve not done a class with her, you’ll find it to be a great learning experience. If you’ve never done goldwork and want to try, Clara is a good place to start. For Fiber Talk listeners, Clara and Ecclesiastical Sewing are offering two free kits, along with the class. We’re offering one kit to Fiber Talk Patreon subscribers and one kit to the Fiber Talk general audience. Patreon subscribers are welcome to enter both drawings. The live, online class is December 5 between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m U.S. Central, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. GMT. To enter the drawing, send an email to gary@wetalkfiber.com. In the subject line, use the name Clara. In the body of the email, provide your mailing address and phone number. The deadline for entry is midnight U.S. Eastern, November 7. We’re joined this week by Beth Walker, author of the book, “The Craft of Thai Ribbon Weaving.” Ribbon weaving is a fun maker activity that requires nothing more than a pair of scissors (not embroidery scissors!) and some 3/8-in. ribbon or ribbon-like paper. You’ll have an easier time finding the paper and it probably works better than ribbon (Froebel Mint link below). These woven shapes are fun to make and, made small, might be good embellishments for needlework. Beth’s book is an excellent tool for learning the techniques. This week we’re sponsored by Avlea Folk Embroidery and our topic is the health benefits of needlework. The inspiration for our conversation is an Instagram post by @thedoctorofshopping that explores how much more you get out of that initial expenditure for a needlework kit. You’ll learn about things such as the IKEA effect and The Third Place. For Fiber Talk Patreon members, we continued the conversation to explore muscle memory, flow, and advancing your stitching. This was a fun one that prompted some thinking. The Embroiderers’ Guild of America sponsors the return of cross-stitch designer Lindsay Swearingen of Tusk and Cardinal. Lindsay’s new book, “Cross-Stitch from the Dark Ages,” is likely one of the most unique collections of cross-stitch designs you’ll encounter. She did a ton of research into medieval arts and practices to come up with a collection of 25 projects designed to “plague your walls.” Throughout the conversation, we all share our favorite designs and learn about the inspiration behind the book and how Lindsay worked with sample stitchers and a great photographer to create a terrific book.—Beth and Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video You can listen by using the player above or you can subscribe to Fiber Talk through iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Audible, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, Podbay, Podbean, and many other podcast sources.
