An AI chatbot and a complete stranger were put to the test. Which one did a better job reducing loneliness? The human. In this episode of Egotastic FunTime: The ReLoaded Cut, we're using Stuart Fails to Save the Universe to explore AI companionship, loneliness, and why genuine human connection may be more important than ever.My wife and I loved the show's first season. Imagine The Big Bang Theory meets Sliders with Avengers: Endgame energy. But this isn't a review. We're investigating why Stuart Bloom makes such an unlikely multiverse hero, what researchers are discovering about emotional relationships with AI, and why Stuart's friendship with Denise, Bert, and Kripke reveals something important about our increasingly digital world.IN THIS EPISODE:Why Stuart is the perfect unlikely heroWhat research reveals about chatbots and lonelinessWhy people turn to AI for emotional supportWhat the series gets right about human connectionWhy convenient companionship isn't always meaningful companionshipWhy we may need each other more than everTechnology will keep getting easier to talk to. People probably won't. And that may be exactly why we still need each other.QUESTION: If AI could offer effortless companionship, what part of human connection would you never give up?SCI-FI • HUMANITY • THE FUTUREWATCH STUART FAILS TO SAVE THE UNIVERSEhttps://amzn.to/4z96osKLISTEN ON SPOTIFYhttps://bit.ly/4AI8OQGSUPPORT EGOTASTIC FUNTIMEPatreon: https://tinyurl.com/EgoPatreonPayPal: https://paypal.me/egotasticfuntimeFOLLOW EGOTASTIC FUNTIMEYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EgotasticFunTimeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/egotasticfuntime/X/Twitter: https://x.com/EgotasticFTRECOMMENDED LINKSThe Guide to The Orville: https://amzn.to/4vp0MIAThe Orville Season 3: https://amzn.to/4xRy84bSympathy For The Devil: https://amzn.to/4g9oQJUElgato Wave:3 Mic: https://amzn.to/4hZDELDSome links are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.#StuartFailsToSaveTheUniverse #SciFi #ArtificialIntelligence #TheBigBangTheory #EgotasticFunTime
Firefly lasted just one season. The official cause of death? Low ratings. But the evidence raises a bigger question: did the show fail, or did Fox help bury it?In this Egotastic FunTime cold-case investigation, JP reopens the file on one of science fiction’s most infamous cancellations. From the missing pilot and broken episode order to sports interruptions and the ratings, we examine how the crew of Serenity lost their place on television—and why the Browncoats refused to let them disappear. Was Fox guilty? Streaming changed television forever — but it may also be quietly killing the communities that form around it.In this episode of Egotastic FunTime, JP looks at how 8-episode seasons, multi-year gaps, binge releases, and shorter runs are making it harder for fandoms to grow, connect, and stay excited between seasons.Shows used to have time to breathe. Characters had more room to develop. Fans had months to talk, speculate, argue, rewatch, and build a community around what they loved. Now, a season can arrive, disappear in a weekend, and leave fans waiting two or three years for the next chapter. So what happens to fandom when the conversation ends almost as soon as it begins? This episode explores how modern streaming habits are changing television, why longer seasons helped fandom thrive, and whether the current model is actually hurting the shows it was supposed to help.If you love television, science fiction, fandom, streaming, or pop culture, this one is for you.SUPPORT EGOTASTIC FUNTIMEPatreon: https://tinyurl.com/EgoPatreonPayPal: https://paypal.me/egotasticfuntimeFOLLOW EGOTASTIC FUNTIMEYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EgotasticFunTimeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/egotasticfuntime/X/Twitter: https://x.com/EgotasticFTTHE ORVILLEThe Guide to The Orville: https://amzn.to/4vp0MIAThe Orville Season 3: https://amzn.to/4xRy84bSome links may be affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you.Egotastic FunTime — conversations about television, science fiction, technology, fandom, culture, and the weird future we’re all living through.I hope all your times are Egotastic FunTimes. Are short sci-fi TV seasons making it harder to build lasting fandoms? Why do streaming shows give us eight or ten episodes, disappear for a year or two, and expect a real community to grow in the space between? In this episode of Egotastic FunTime, I’m talking about the shrinking TV season, the obsession with appealing to “general audiences,” and what gets lost when studios try to make something for everybody instead of making something specific that people can truly love.We get into modern shows like Fallout, Silo, 3 Body Problem, Foundation and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, along with the difference between today’s short seasons and the much longer runs that helped older sci-fi series build lasting communities. I also talk about modern Star Trek, how chasing a broader audience can alienate the people who were already invested, and why eight hours of content can create buzz—but it has a much harder time creating a home for a fandom. That same idea is a huge part of why I moved Egotastic FunTime toward audio-first podcasting. I’m no longer interested in changing the conversation just to keep somebody who doesn’t care about the subject watching for another ten seconds. I want to make the conversation I actually want to have—and find the people who wanted to have that exact conversation too.So what modern sci-fi series do you wish had longer seasons? And what’s the sweet spot: 12 episodes? 14? 16?Links & SupportThe Guide to The Orville: https://amzn.to/4vp0MIAPatreon: https://tinyurl.com/EgoPatreonPayPal: https://paypal.me/egotasticfuntimeAs an Amazon Associate, I may earn from qualifying purchases. Thanks for listening and helping me keep these conversations going.I hope all your times are Egotastic FunTimes. What if The Orville understood one of the biggest questions surrounding artificial intelligence before the rest of us started worrying about it?In this episode of Egotastic FunTime: The ReLoaded Cut, I’m looking at Isaac, the Kaylons, and the uncomfortable idea hiding underneath their story.Maybe the danger isn’t simply that artificial intelligence becomes smarter than us.Maybe it’s what intelligent machines learn by watching us.Isaac’s relationships with Claire, Ty, Marcus, and the crew fundamentally change the way he sees biological life. And when you compare that story with the way AI is becoming part of our jobs, relationships, businesses, and everyday lives, The Orville suddenly feels a lot less like science fiction. But there’s another reason this feels like the perfect time to be talking about The Orville.Later in the episode, we get into a new Season 4 production development from the Fox Studios lot, including reports that The Orville is now working out of Stage 14 while its longtime home on Stage 15 is being used by another production. We still don’t have the big official “cameras are rolling” announcement, but physical production activity is a lot more interesting than another round of rumors. And if The Orville really is preparing to return, a show that spent years exploring AI, technology, humanity, and the consequences of the things we create may be coming back at exactly the right moment.TALKING THE ORVILLE YouTubeThe Unofficial Fandom Podcast https://www.youtube.com/@TALKINGTHEORVILLESUPPORTPatreon: https://tinyurl.com/EgoPatreon PayPal: https://paypal.me/egotasticfuntimeFOLLOWYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EgotasticFunTimeSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5GFicOch6Up1mlmzomOgir Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/egotasticfuntime/ X/Twitter: https://x.com/EgotasticFTTHE GUIDE TO THE ORVILLEhttps://amzn.to/4vp0MIAAs an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
The Modern Job Search...JP was laid off, immediately started applying for work—and discovered just how frustrating the modern job search has become. From automated résumé screening and AI hiring tools to ghost jobs, employer silence, and hundreds of applicants competing for the same position, is technology actually making it harder for workers and employers to find each other?Have you experienced the modern job search? How many applications did it take before you received an interview?Do you think hiring has become too automated?Tell me your story.SUPPORT EGOTASTIC FUNTIMEI'm currently searching for my next job while continuing to create Egotastic FunTime. Artificial intelligence is everywhere right now—and so is the fear surrounding it.In this episode of Egotastic FunTime: The ReLoaded Cut, JP takes a closer look at AI hysteria, the growing fear of artificial intelligence, and why humans have a long history of panicking over powerful new technology. From killer robots in movies to AI-generated images, deepfakes, job automation, scams, medical breakthroughs, scientific research, weather forecasting, and cybersecurity, AI is already doing far more than most people realize. The real question may not be whether artificial intelligence is dangerous. The real question may be whether humans can use a powerful new technology responsibly.AI can be used to improve medicine, speed up research, help with productivity, analyze massive amounts of information, and solve problems humans struggle to process alone. It can also be used for fraud, misinformation, surveillance, manipulation, cybercrime, and other harmful purposes. So is AI itself the problem?Or is the problem the people who misuse it?JP also talks about the current wave of AI fear content, why scary AI headlines spread so easily online, and how fear itself has become part of the attention economy. If you enjoy these conversations and want to help keep the show going while JP is on the job search:SUPPORT THE SHOWPayPal: https://paypal.me/egotasticfuntimePatreon: https://tinyurl.com/EgoPatreonRecommended Reading: Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI by Ethan MollickA practical, thoughtful look at how humans can work with artificial intelligence instead of simply fearing it. What if you could just turn the algorithm off?In this episode of Egotastic FunTime, JP digs into the increasingly creepy world of personalized recommendations, online tracking, and the way algorithms quietly shape what we watch, buy, believe, and even create. From a bizarre Hanson recommendation to Australia’s push for more user control, this episode asks a simple question: are algorithms making the internet better, or are they slowly taking away our autonomy? We also look at how recommendation systems affect creators, why outrage gets rewarded, and what the internet might feel like if platforms simply showed us the people and content we actually chose to follow.Would you turn off personalized recommendations if you had the option?Support the show: Patreon: https://tinyurl.com/EgoPatreon PayPal: https://paypal.me/egotasticfuntimeFollow Egotastic FunTime: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/egotasticfuntime/X/Twitter: https://x.com/EgotasticFTThe Orville Guide: https://amzn.to/4vp0MIA Sympathy For The Devil: https://amzn.to/4g9oQJU Microphone: https://amzn.to/4hZDELDAs an Amazon Associate, I may earn from qualifying purchases.
