Hello, this is Earnest Mann.If you're like me, you've heard enough bullshit to last a lifetime. So stick around. This is a show for grown adults who are tired of being handled — by the companies that sell to them, the institutions that manage them, and the smiling people who explain why it's all for your own good. I'm not here to yell at you. I'm here to make a few things make sense that never made sense before. Useful information and unpopular opinions, delivered in colorful language, by an adult... for adults.Every episode takes one piece of the system apart — the fees nobody voted for, the language engineered to make you stop asking questions, the fine print that turns a fair deal into a subscription you can't cancel. I tell you how it works, how it got that way, and what it costs you. Then I give you the part that actually helps: the rule sitting underneath it, so the next time it's aimed at you, you see it coming. No experts. No lectures. No pretending I'm neutral. Just a man

America just held its midterms. On November 3rd, all 435 House seats, 33 or 34 Senate seats, and 36 governorships got decided — a genuinely enormous amount of machinery, and the honest question is what any of it actually changed for you. Because here's the uncomfortable part: replacing one group of parasites with another accomplishes nothing for the person standing in line at the grocery store. The technicals are true. Everything after them is theater. The people who win are the people who were always going to win, and the people who lose are the ones who thought showing up to vote was the whole job.No one inside the machine can buck the machine — they're part of it, they're funded by it, and they answer to it. The System runs on one fuel, corruption, and corruption always destroys. Always. Every empire that ever told itself it was the exception is now a chapter in somebody else's history book.So what does that leave you with? A clearer eye, and a shorter list of things worth getting upset about. That's not defeatism. That's finally knowing where you actually stand.I'd really like to hear from you, so you can visit me at - TheEarnestMannShow.com - or click one of my contact links below with any questions or comments, I read and respond to all.The Earnest Mann Show — useful information, and unpopular opinions, given with colorful language, by an adult... for adults.Gallery & artwork: https://TheEarnestMannShow.com/galleryAbout & contact: https://theearnestmannshow.com/about-...Support the show: https://ko-fi.comearnestmann #EarnestMannShow #TheSystem #Consent #LogicalFallacies #StraightFace #Absurdity #HowYouGetFooled #Podcast #Enshittification
Whatever happened to the price on the sign? There's a diner I used to eat at where the menu had a coffee ring laminated into the plastic, and every price was printed in ink — same number for me as for the guy on the next stool. That's what a price used to be. A fact.McDonald's says AI does not set its menu prices, that franchisees set prices and the tools only recommend. A federal lawsuit filed in Chicago alleges the platform uses transaction data to set prices across thousands of independently owned restaurants. The word carrying the whole denial is "recommendation." If everyone follows it, and stepping away has to be documented, optional stops meaning anything. This isn't about coupons. It's about the assumption underneath every deal you've ever made — that the two of you are looking at the same number.I'd really like to hear from you, so you can visit me at - TheEarnestMannShow.com - or click one of my contact links below with any questions or comments, I read and respond to all.The Earnest Mann Show — useful information, and unpopular opinions, given with colorful language, by an adult... for adults.Gallery & artwork: https://TheEarnestMannShow.com/galleryAbout & contact: https://theearnestmannshow.com/about-...Support the show: https://ko-fi.comearnestmann #EarnestMannShow #TheSystem #Consent #LogicalFallacies #StraightFace #Absurdity #HowYouGetFooled #Podcast #Enshittification
Have you ever spent forty minutes explaining something to somebody who asked — and watched the whole thing land, clear as a bell — and then watched it evaporate about forty seconds later?Arthur Schopenhauer said a man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills. It's the whole problem in just fourteen words. Your preference isn't the product of your reasoning — your preference is the customer, and your reasoning is the fella in the back room writing the justification after the order's already been filled. This is a piece about why the truth doesn't take. Not a rant about how everybody's gotten stupid — that's a cheap coat and it doesn't keep anybody warm. It's about the will getting there first, the invoice nobody wants to receive, and the one thing about seeing clearly that can't be handed to another person. If you've ever done the explaining, paid for it, and watched nothing change, this one was written for you.I'd really like to hear from you, so you can visit me at - TheEarnestMannShow.com - or click one of my contact links below with any questions or comments, I read and respond to all.The Earnest Mann Show — useful information, and unpopular opinions, given with colorful language, by an adult... for adults.Gallery & artwork: https://TheEarnestMannShow.com/galleryAbout & contact: https://theearnestmannshow.com/about-...Support the show: https://ko-fi.comearnestmann #EarnestMannShow #TheSystem #Consent #LogicalFallacies #StraightFace #Absurdity #HowYouGetFooled #Podcast #Enshittification
You're standing in the aisle with two products in your hand and no idea they came out of the same building — here's who actually wrote that price tag.Grocery prices didn't just drift upward. They were engineered. This episode walks through the machinery behind the price you pay at the register — the illusion of choice on the shelf, the packages that quietly shrink while the price holds, and the price tags that may not be the same for you as they are for the person behind you in line.Along the way you'll meet Ray, who has shopped the same store for forty-one years and knows that store like the back of his own hand. Ray knows the building. He's never met the people who own it.And that is exactly by design. The Federal Trade Commission has spent real time documenting this, and has now proposed — proposed, not finalized — a policy statement on personalized pricing. That delay is its own kind of answer.By the end of this one, you'll know why that price tag was written for you, and who benefits from you never asking.I'd really like to hear from you, so you can visit me at - TheEarnestMannShow.com - or click one of my contact links below with any questions or comments, I read and respond to all.The Earnest Mann Show — useful information, and unpopular opinions, given with colorful language, by an adult... for adults.Gallery & artwork: https://TheEarnestMannShow.com/galleryAbout & contact: https://theearnestmannshow.com/about-contact/Support the show: https://ko-fi.com/earnestmann#EarnestMannShow #TheSystem #Consent #LogicalFallacies #StraightFace #Absurdity #HowYouGetFooled #Podcast #Enshittification
A warehouse near you drinks more water than the whole town — and won't tell you how much, because that number is a "trade secret."There's a new kind of neighbor moving into counties across the country, and it doesn't look like a factory or a mall. It looks like nothing at all — a long gray building with no windows and a fence around it. What it does inside is drink. Water, and power, at a scale that would make the mill down the road look like a garden hose.At a county planning meeting, an old man stands up with a yellow folder under his arm and asks the only question that matters: how much water is this thing gonna use? The room goes quiet in a way that tells you the answer is already known — just not by anyone allowed to say it out loud. The people who wrote the paperwork get to decide whether the paperwork is approved. It comes down to three things that keep a town from stopping one of these: there's no law against it, because the laws on the books were written before anyone could imagine a building that drinks; the hurry, because decisions that "HAS to be NOW" don't get read out loud; and the word "secret," which is doing more work in this country right now than any other word in the dictionary. This isn't a story about technology. It's a story about consent — and what it means when the answer to a straight question is legally classified as none of your business.I'd really like to hear from you, so you can visit me at - TheEarnestMannShow.com - or click one of my contact links below with any questions or comments, I read and respond to all.The Earnest Mann Show — useful information, and unpopular opinions, given with colorful language, by an adult... for adults.Gallery & artwork: https://TheEarnestMannShow.com/galleryAbout & contact: https://theearnestmannshow.com/about-contact/Support the show: https://ko-fi.com/earnestmann#EarnestMannShow #TheSystem #Consent #LogicalFallacies #StraightFace #Absurdity #HowYouGetFooled #Podcast #Enshittification
This week: one question nobody wants to answer out loud — and why "it's obviously wrong" isn't an answer at all. We take the machinery apart: what consent actually requires, why harm is the hidden premise doing all the work, and the difference between knowing a verdict and being able to produce the reasoning behind it. A short exercise in thinking on purpose, for adults who'd rather understand a rule than just obey it. Until next time; this is no bullshit; earnestly honest, Earnest.Gallery & artwork: https://TheEarnestMannShow.com/galleryAbout & contact: https://theearnestmannshow.com/about-contact/Support the show: https://ko-fi.com/earnestmann#EarnestMannShow #TheSystem #Consent #LogicalFallacies #StraightFace #Absurdity #HowYouGetFooled #Podcast #Enshittification
The store was designed before you walked in. Five manipulation tactics with industry names are doing the work on you every time you shop — the Gruen transfer, the decompression zone, the roach motel, confirm shaming, and drip pricing. This episode names them, shows you what each one actually costs you, and makes one thing clear: you didn't fall for it. Somebody built it. Sources referenced: the FTC staff report Bringing Dark Patterns to Light (Sept 2022); FTC v. Amazon.com — filed June 2023, dismissal denied May 2024, $2.5B settlement announced Sept 2025; researcher Harry Brignull's documentation of the roach motel; and the FTC's finalized rule on unfair or deceptive fees. Have you ever done everything they asked you to do and still ended up outside the room you helped build? I know that feeling.Twelve years at the same place. The one who trained the new hires, the one who came in on the Saturday nobody else would. Then a phone call on a Tuesday, fifteen minutes long, and a folder in front of them with a number on it.In this episode I name three workplace patterns, and none of them are about you: staffing levels set at the minimum that will still produce output, loyalty paid in loyalty instead of money, and performance reviews that quietly turn into a paper trail. Underneath all three is one plain fact — in most of this country, employment is at will, and either side can end it any day for almost any reason, or no reason at all. That's not a company being cruel. That's the room you've been standing in the whole time. If this sounds like your version of it and you want to tell me how it went down for you, reach out to me on my website's about contact page, I just want to hear your experience.
