#60 Not Knowing

In this episode, Catherine asks Roy what he doesn’t know, and the two explore why not knowing is a theme worth embracing. Roy says the more he reads and the further down the rabbit holes he goes, the more he realises how much he didn’t know. Catherine says what she truly knows is what she has lived through herself. She explains why, when asked if she believes in energy work, she answers that she doesn’t need to believe in it because she has experienced it directly. She then covers the Dunning-Kruger effect, where people who know very little tend to feel very sure, and confidence drops to accuracy as real expertise grows. She applies it to economics, politics, health and world events, where most of us hold strong opinions on things we know little about. She describes a game from her workshops where people practise saying “I don’t know” and find it surprisingly hard. They leave listeners with questions: what are you pretending to know, what do you really know, and are you willing to own it? They also invite comments, questions and topic requests.
