T. J. Oshie: The Work Behind the Olympic Moment

Before the Stanley Cup and the Olympic shootout against Russia in Sochi, TJ Oshie was a kid in Seattle playing every sport he could. Then a new student in Warroad, Minnesota, wondering if he’d make the varsity hockey team. On Episode 3 of Dialed, Adam Thielen sits down with Oshie to talk about the family sacrifices, coaches, and daily habits that shaped his hockey career. Oshie explains why “your work ethic is a skill,” how playing multiple sports made him a better hockey player, and what he learned alongside Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Bäckström, and Jonathan Toews. He also revisits his unforgettable 2014 Olympic shootout and the emotional hat trick he scored after losing his father. Plus: life after the NHL, fatherhood, his Warroad apparel brand, and why golf still drives him crazy. 🔔 Subscribe to Dialed for more conversations about the work, mindset, and people behind great athletes. ✍️ Comment with your thoughts on the show & ideas for future guests/segments! 📧 Send questions for Adam to dialedpodcast@the33rdteam.com 00:00 Intro 02:13 Welcome TJ Oshie 03:00 Growing Up Playing Every Sport 06:30 How Other Sports Shaped His Hockey Game 09:40 Forced to Choose Between Basketball and Hockey 13:18 His Family’s Sacrifices 15:11 Sponsor: Kalshi 16:40 Finding His Place in Warroad 20:11 Turning Doubt Into Work Ethic 25:04 What Separates the Greats 29:35 Seahawks Fandom & Championship Team Chemistry 33:04 North Dakota & Competing With Jonathan Toews 38:30 Getting Drafted Without Watching the Draft 42:09 Team USA & the Olympic Shootout Against Russia 46:24 His Stanley Cup Final Moment 48:04 Losing His Dad & an Emotional Hat Trick 51:41 Golf, Competition & the Mental Game 57:12 Fatherhood & Life After the NHL 59:07 Building Warroad & Protecting Young Players -- This episode of Dialed is presented by Kalshi.
