How do whitetail deer really see? Can they see in slow motion? If so, what does this mean for our hunting strategies, the camouflage we buy, even how we move in the woods? In this Deer IQ video we look at the science from a University of Georgia Deer Lab study, which came from my discussion with Dr. Karl Miller on the Deer IQ Podcast - for that full podcast listen to #49High IQ Topics are stand alone bonus episodes separate from our curriculum series. In this episode we start our series on the science of whitetail deer, and how knowing that is our greatest leverage, our greatest potential to become better hunters. In part one we are joined by the well-known research scientist Dr. Karl Miller of the University of Georgia Deer Lab. He has done incredible research over the years on deer and made some impactful discoveries. We’re going to talk about some of those over the next few episodes and delve into just what makes deer tick. Now, Dr. Miller lives in a remote area, so reception was spotty - a few parts of the video version look like a bad movie overdub, but the content is definitely top notch - just a warning for ya. But, this is a very High IQ episode. And, you’re going to want to write some of this overflowing wealth of wisdom down, and reflect on it after to get the most out of it. Our free journal is the best way to do that - download it below HERE. Included in this episode:•What most hunters don't understand about deer senses that negatively impacts their hunting.• How a whitetail's 3 main survival senses really work together, and what knocking one or more of these out means for hunters. • What Dr. Miller’s research revealed about how deer actually see - and what the implications for us are as we hit the woods, buy camouflage, and plan our hunting strategy.• How deer actually see in slow motion - Yes this is a real thing..And a whole lot more in this very High IQ, high value episode!Year Theme: To Be a Greater HunterSeries: The Great Leverage - Deer ScienceEpisode # 49Guest: Host Adam Lewis; Dr. Karl Miller IQ ranking - 10 (advanced)DEER IQ Services (Signup for more information if interested in a whitetail weekend workshop, strategic land and hunting plans for your private land, or a public land hunting analysis): : https://forms.gle/peiUQPgUWDKkGG6g7MORE DEER IQ Stuff: Get started - website overview HERE: https://deeriq.com/full-overview/Facebook Private Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/511109237864762Deer IQ FREE Journal: https://deeriq.com/journal/Deer IQ Test: https://deeriq.com/deeriqtest/Pressured Public Lands Hunting Guide: https://deeriq.com/public-land-hunting-guide/Curriculum: https://deeriq.com/curriculum/Newsletter Signup: https://deeriq.com/signup/Patreon - Contribute Financially to Deer IQ: https://www.patreon.com/DeerIQPatreon
In this episode we wrapup our series - The Legacy of Great Hunters. We look at the topic of hunter recruitment and retention - why is this so important, and what is our role in ensuring hunting sticks around for generations down the road? This is a very important topic, because the decisions, or lack thereof today will affect what we leave behind - for better or worse. I’m joined by Megan Plete Postol, who has more experience than most in the best ways to reach new hunters - Is it youth seasons? Do those even work? I think it's an important discussion that will make you think. Topics Discussed:• Why we are currently seeing a decline in hunters, and why this matters.• The reasons people get into hunting now, vs. why they did in the past. An important distinction to remember if we want to reach new hunters.• Who should be our focus - what people group, if we really want to expand the deer hunting lifestyle.• What are the barriers to new hunters we need to help remove to grow hunting.• Avenues to get involved to be a solution to this, and get involved with others - something that in this internet age we have seem to have lost. And much more!Year Theme: To Be a Greater HunterSeries: The Legacy of Great HuntersEpisode # 48Guest: Host Adam Lewis; Megan Plete Postol: https://deerassociation.com/ IQ ranking - 1 (beginner)DEER IQ Services Signup (Signup for more information if interested in a whitetail weekend workshop, strategic land and hunting plans for your private land, or a public land hunting analysis): : https://forms.gle/peiUQPgUWDKkGG6g7MORE DEER IQ Stuff: Get started - website overview HERE: https://deeriq.com/full-overview/Facebook Private Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/511109237864762Deer IQ FREE Journal: https://deeriq.com/journal/Deer IQ Test: https://deeriq.com/deeriqtest/Pressured Public Lands Hunting Guide: https://deeriq.com/public-land-hunting-guide/Curriculum: https://deeriq.com/curriculum/Newsletter Signup: https://deeriq.com/signup/Patreon - Contribute Financially to Deer IQ: https://www.patreon.com/DeerIQPatreon

In this double episode we continue our series - The Legacy of Great Hunters. I interview Michigan DNR deer specialist Chad Stewart, and we get very candid about regulations, if they are working, and we discuss some potential fixes to perceived problems in Michigan. This was recorded several months ago, and since Michigan has started an initiative with the goal of improving regulations (also, I’ve slightly changed some of my stances since this recording, namely regarding youth seasons being doe only - read my full thoughts in this related article HERE ) This discussion is still very valid, and also might apply to other states in similar situations. Chad gives his take on a few of my proposed changes - one of which he says is terrible! If you’re not happy with deer hunting regulations, how the DNR is handling your deer herd, and feel helpless about what to do to fix things, I think this podcast is for you. And please excuse a bit of throat clearing and some hard cuts, as I had some allergies at the time and tried to edit some of this out.SHOW NOTES:Part 1:• Chad’s background as a hunter and professional DNR biologist• Chad’s take on stewardship and conservation - what’s the difference and who is responsible for the health of the deer herd?• How regulations are made, and how they can be changed• Harvest data collection - the old surveys, their reliability, and why the switch to mandatory reporting was made• What recommendations of the DNR to the NRC are based on for new regulations• Is science or hunter opinion driving hunting regulation decisions? What should in Chad’s opinion?Part 2:• Are deer tag sale revenues driving decisions on Michigan seasons and license structure?• Do liberal, long deer seasons and increased opportunities actually help hunter retention and taking more deer?• Are youth seasons actually working for getting and retaining new hunters?• Chad’s reaction to my proposed idea to restrict what youth hunters can take• Public land changes - my proposed changes for trimming and screw in gear holders, and Chad’s reaction.• Will zones for rifle and shotgun change, and what we can use in these zones in the foreseeable future?Make sure to download our FREE journal to help with the episode, so you get the most possible out of it! In this episode we continue our series "The Legacy of Great Hunters," Part 3 - Talking with the National Deer Association's Chief Conservation Officer Kip Adams about what healthy deer herds really look like, and what we need to do to make/keep them that way - both on an individual level, and on a state level. I also dig into the data of Michigan's harvest, and get Kip's take on that on how to maybe turn some things around in my home state. This is a good one for all hunters who want to make a difference and leave things better than we found them. This episode includes: • Kip's perspective on what a healthy deer herd really looks like, and indicators to look for.• What healthy sex and age ratios actually are, and how and exactly when to measure them.• What states and individuals can do to balance the herd for age and sex ratio.• Is Education or State Regulation better at balancing a herd?• For states (like Michigan) that have an unhealthy balance of taking bucks over does, what can help turn this around.• Kip's take on the effectiveness of 1 buck tag and also Earn a Buck.• A good way YOU can estimate your local herd so you can make good harvest goals. And so much more!! In this episode we continue our series "The Legacy of Great Hunters," Part 2 - continuing our talk with Dr. Jimmy Sites whose resume is extensive, and includes author, pastor, and producer of the award-winning TV show Spiritual Outdoor Adventures. Jimmy dives into some High IQ public land hunting tactics, and discusses a near-death miracle in Alaska. It's a great episode I think you'll get a lot out of, including:• Jimmy's story of how he shot a 165" public land monster - on the ground, and exact tactics he used that you can as well.• Exactly when and how to stalk both turkey and deer, and when not to - what conditions do you need, and the nitty gritty details to do it successfully.• How he gets access to public hunting land when and where others just can't.• A near-death experience in Alaska and just what he took from it. In this episode we start our series "The Legacy of Great Hunters," Part 1 - looking at what is vital for us to consider as hunters regarding stewardship and what we're really going to leave behind. We discuss this with Dr. Jimmy Sites whose resume is extensive, and includes author, pastor, and producer of the award-winning TV show Spiritual Outdoor Adventures. I think you'll be challenged and inspired by Jimmy and his ideas and vision of stewardship. We discuss:• Jimmy's view of stewardship and what that should look like for hunters ( and not look like - something many of us get wrong). • Where we are losing the battle as hunters, and the 80% we should be focusing on.• What he thinks being a great hunter looks like, and how to handle our influence well.• What's the biggest thing holding hunters back from being at that top-level.• Why he has never put an animal in the records books (until just recently) and what changed his mind.
