In the sinister land of Thay, scheming mages called Red Wizards dominate a society steeped in magic and deceit. Those without magical or economic power are at the mercy of these fascist mages, who harshly punish any who defy them. The truth is that the Red Wizards are a threat to all of Faerun, held back by the Simbul and Rashemen and their own disorganization. Those who know Thay realize that it is the Red Wizards' own lack of a coherent structure and their refusal to combine forces that keeps them from conquering the rest of Toril. But there is one among them who wishes to change this. Thay is also infamous as the home of Szass Tam, the dread lich who seeks to rule this nation and turn those who oppose him into undead minions. Tavern tales across sunlit lands whisper of the Underdark, a lightless, subterranean realm that is home to fabled races and ancient, unspeakable evil. It is a domain of primeval mysteries and unending war, a hidden world of cruel masters and hopeless slaves, filled with monstrous creatures that were old before humans were born. Aboleths. Beholders. Mind Flayers. Eldritch entities of unspeakable visage. And yet, despite the potentially greater danger posed by these and other horrors of the deep, it is the Drow that might well be the most notorious of all the Underdark races. These most dreaded of underdark dwellers were once part of the community of elves that still roam the world's forests. Now these dark elves inhabit black caves and winding tunnels under the earth, where they make dire plans against the people that still walk beneath the sun, on the surface of the green earth. In Dungeons and Dragons, a monster is defined as any creature that can be interacted with and potentially fought and killed. Even something as harmless as a frog or as benevolent as a unicorn is a monster by this definition. An obstacle to overcome. An interactable entity to fill in an imaginary world. And sometimes, a monster is a metaphor. But one monster, more than any other, represents the awe and terror humanity can feel before the forces of nature. It represents the inevitability of every person, society, and culture's ultimate futility against the eternity of time and and the insignificance of our power, ambition, or potential. The inevitable end and our inability to stop that end from coming. I am of course speaking of the Tarrasque. The greatest of all monsters. Asmodeus. The Archfiend. The overlord of all the dukes of hell. He is a primal embodiment of lawful evil and a supreme strategist of unparalleled skill. He alone commands all devilkind and reigns as the undisputed master of the Nine Hells. Even the deities that call that plane home pay Asmodeus a great deal of respect. His sinister machinations may take centuries, if not millennia, to come to fruition. His master plans extend across universes. And his labyrinthine, insidious intrigues are inexplicable to most outside observers, for Asmodeus lets even his own servants stew in fear of his next move. A demon princes’ arrogance is exceeded only by their ambition. One such demon prince is an insidious presence that worms into mortal hearts and minds, and deceives them into turning away from righteousness to embrace brutality. This agent of destruction is Baphomet, known as the Prince of Beasts, the Trampler, the Minotaur Lord, and the Horned King. Born from the churning chaos of the Abyss near the dawn of time, Baphomet is the embodiment of savagery, one of nature’s most destructive aspects, and the catalyst that looses the beast residing in us all. To feel the thunder of orcish war drums outside the gate and to hear a chorus of voices growling, “Gruumsh!” is the nightmare of many human, dwarf, and elven settlements in the world. For no matter how thick its walls, skilled its archers, or brave its knights, few settlements have ever withstood a full-scale onslaught of orcs. Check out our sponsor Start Playing! The first gnolls arose from hyenas that fed on flesh tainted by the Abyss. Their corruption and violence delighted the demon lord Yeenoghu, who encouraged their numbers and spread them across the multiverse. Ever since, gnolls have been the cackling servants of Yeenoghu, existing to cause ruin and to feast on what remains. Feral, demon-worshiping marauders, gnolls attack communities along the borderlands without warning and slaughter without mercy, all in the name of the demon lord Yeenoghu.
