The episode traces how early Zionist writers and the Jewish settlers of the Jezreel Valley encountered a tension between the mythical Gilboa they knew from the Bible and the physical landscape they experienced in everyday life. As the valley became green, cultivated, and populated, settlers began to question and reinterpret the mountain’s ancient image as barren and cursed. Rather than simply preserving the biblical myth, they actively reshaped it through settlement and cultivation, transforming a landscape associated with defeat and death into one representing regeneration and national revival. In this process, Gilboa became a Zionist sacred landscape connecting biblical memory with modern experiences of place, loss, renewal, and the aspiration to turn an ancient curse into a lasting blessing.
