Stuart Moore and John Barber Take Comic Crusaders Inside Marvel Artist Archive: Jim Lee The writer and PUG-W Editor in Chief join Al Mega to explore the research, rare artwork, editorial decisions, and extraordinary Marvel journey behind one of comics' most influential artists. There are comic-book artists who become popular, artists who become influential, and artists whose work permanently changes the way an entire generation imagines superheroes. Jim Lee belongs firmly in that final category. On Comic Crusaders Podcast #733, host Al Mega welcomes writer, editor, and historian Stuart Moore, along with Pan-Universal Galactic Worldwide Editor in Chief John Barber, for an extensive discussion about the creation of Marvel Artist Archive: Jim Lee. The deluxe hardcover is being produced by PUG-W in partnership with Marvel Comics and presents approximately 300 oversized pages chronicling Lee's Marvel career. The collection travels from his developmental work on Alpha Flight and Punisher War Journal through the industry-shaking success of Uncanny X-Men, his celebrated Marvel trading-card illustrations, rare artwork, covers, process material, and his later work on Heroes Reborn: Fantastic Four. This is not simply a collection of Jim Lee's most recognizable images. The project is designed to show progression the choices, experimentation, discipline, and rapid artistic development that transformed a promising young illustrator into one of the biggest names American comics had ever produced. Stuart Moore provides the book's historical narrative, original research, background information, and newly conducted interviews. His contribution places the finished artwork into context, allowing readers to understand not only what Jim Lee created, but when he created it, what stage of his career he had reached, and how quickly his visual storytelling was evolving. During the interview, Moore joins Al in examining the qualities already visible in Lee's earliest Marvel assignments. The anatomy, character acting, page composition, attention to texture, cinematic framing, and remarkable level of detail were still developing, but the ambition was already sitting there on the page like Wolverine waiting for somebody to make the wrong move. The conversation also digs into a question that comic historians and longtime readers love debating: Was there one particular issue, cover, or sequence where Jim Lee stopped being viewed as an exciting new artist and became an undeniable superstar? That transformation did not happen by accident. Behind the dynamic poses and famous crosshatching was an artist working under deadline pressure, studying the craft, refining his visual instincts, and learning how to control the reader's eye across every panel. John Barber brings the editorial perspective to the conversation, discussing the enormous challenge of transforming decades of artwork into a cohesive reading experience. A book of this scale cannot simply throw beautiful images onto pages and hope the audience supplies the structure. It must balance chronology, artistic development, historical commentary, finished artwork, rough material, covers, trading-card illustrations, rarities, and enough breathing room for each piece to command attention. That challenge becomes even greater when the intended audience includes lifelong Jim Lee collectors, working artists, comic historians, casual Marvel readers, and younger fans who may know Lee's reputation without having experienced his early Marvel material firsthand. Barber discusses the importance of presenting the archive as a visual narrative one that allows readers to watch an artist becoming more confident, ambitious, and technically formidable from assignment to assignment. In other words, the book is not simply showing greatness. It is showing greatness being built. Some of the most revealing pieces in any artist archive are not necessar
Julio Anta Brings Puerto Rican Resistance and Chupacabra Horror to Beast of Borikén The legendary Chupacabra is returning to Puerto Rico, but this time the creature is not arriving as a campfire joke, a blurry photograph or another disposable monster-of-the-week. In Beast of Borikén, writer Julio Anta and artist Daniel Irizarri reclaim the famous cryptid as part of a much larger story about colonialism, displacement, family trauma, resistance and an island pushed beyond its breaking point. Anta joined Al Mega on the Comic Crusaders Podcast for a passionate conversation about the new five-issue series from Dark Horse Comics and Tiny Onion. The discussion explored his journey as a Cuban and Colombian American writer from Miami, his career creating stories centered on Latino characters and the creative responsibility involved in building a supernatural horror narrative rooted specifically in Puerto Rican history and identity. The series follows Loli Flores, an activist fighting against a major development project backed by wealthy outside interests. Loli understands that the language of investment and progress often hides a harsher reality for local communities: rising costs, displacement, unequal access to resources and the gradual transformation of a homeland into a product marketed to people who do not live there. The first issue establishes that conflict through both political debate and personal history. Beginning in Guayama during the devastation and power failures of 2017, the story connects Loli's present-day activism to the suffering her family experienced when critical systems failed. Her anger is therefore not theoretical. She has witnessed how infrastructure, medical vulnerability and political neglect can collide inside an ordinary household. That emotional foundation allows the comic's horror to carry greater weight. When the Chupacabra finally emerges, the creature does not feel randomly inserted into the narrative. Its violence appears connected to the land, the island's past and generations of resistance. The central mystery is not simply whether the monster exists, but what it represents—and whether its attacks are acts of cruelty, protection or judgment. During the interview, Anta discusses why the word "Borikén" was essential to the title, how his collaboration with Puerto Rican artist and co-creator Daniel Irizarri shaped the series and why authenticity required the island to appear as a living community rather than a tropical postcard. Irizarri's artwork presents Puerto Rico through its homes, hills, streets, radio stations, community gatherings, protest lines, construction sites and medical spaces. The result is a setting filled with beauty and tension, while Patricio Delpeche's colors move between storm-soaked anxiety, tropical warmth and supernatural menace. Lucas Gattoni's lettering gives equal force to political confrontation, machinery, protest chants and the creature's violent arrival. Anta also explains how his earlier projects prepared him for this series. From the immigration and family-separation themes of Home to the supernatural border journey of Frontera and the historical celebration of Sí, Se Puede, his work has consistently used genre and graphic storytelling to confront political realities without losing sight of the human beings living inside them. The Comic Crusaders conversation goes beyond the creation of a monster comic. It examines who controls the definition of progress, how folklore preserves cultural memory and why horror becomes more powerful when the audience understands what the monster may be defending. Beast of Borikén #1 is available now from Dark Horse Comics and Tiny Onion. Readers looking for supernatural horror with political purpose, Puerto Rican identity, fierce character work and a Chupacabra unlike any previously seen should not allow this series to disappear into the darkness. Because in Beast of Borikén, the creature may have the claws but human greed still has the sharper teeth. Follow Julio on: TikTok: @julio_anta Ins

Jeff Gomez Goes Deep Down: Building Mythology, Empowering Fans and Protecting Storytelling's Future What keeps a fictional universe alive across movies, comics, games, attractions, and generations? On this episode of the Comic Crusaders Podcast, Al Mega welcomes Jeff Gomez, president and CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment, for a powerful conversation about the hidden architecture behind modern storytelling. Gomez has contributed to the storyworld development and franchise strategy of globally recognized properties including Avatar, Halo, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers, Spider-Man, and Ultraman. His work focuses not simply on expanding intellectual property, but on preserving the emotional, thematic, and mythological coherence that allows a universe to grow without losing its identity. The conversation dives beneath New York City with Deep Down, an urban crime thriller combining investigative drama, occult mystery, political pressure, and social commentary. The series follows NYC Transit Special Ops as its marginalized members investigate the disappearance of a young autistic girl inside the city's sprawling subway system. Gomez also discusses The 10 Commandments of Successful Corporate Narratives, co-written with Alan Berkson, and explains why companies cannot manufacture trust through slogans when their behavior tells an entirely different story. The book presents narrative as an organizational structure that must survive growth, crisis, leadership changes, and public scrutiny. The episode also tackles fan communities, legacy media, canon governance, generative AI, and Gomez's concept of the Mythic Field the deeper human meaning that keeps a storyworld coherent even as its characters, platforms, and participants evolve. This is not merely a discussion about creating more content. It is a conversation about protecting meaning and determining who will shape the storyworlds of the future.
