When God Asks for What You Love Most - Genesis 22:1–19 Supporting Texts: Hebrews 11:17–19; James 1:13; John 1:29; Isaiah 53:6–7; Romans 8:32 Introduction: The Weight of Genesis 22 God asks Abraham for: “your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love.” God Tests, But He Does Not Tempt Genesis 22 begins by saying God “tested” Abraham. James 1:13 makes clear that God does not tempt anyone to evil. The Weight of What God Asks Hebrews 11:19 shows that Abraham believed God could raise Isaac from the dead. Obedience on the Road to Moriah Abraham’s obedience is immediate but not emotionless. Abraham trusts that God cannot lie, break His promise, or cease to be good. The Question That Echoes Through Scripture Isaac asks, “Where is the lamb?” Abraham replies, “God will provide for Himself the lamb.” This question echoes through Scripture:  Genesis 22 plants the question; the gospel gives the final answer. The Lord Provides The centre of the story is not Abraham’s heroism but God’s provision. What This Reveals About God Genesis 22 shows redemption is costly. It involves love, surrender, obedience, blood, and substitution. From Moriah to Calvary Moriah points forward to Calvary. Genesis 22 prepares us to understand the cross. The True and Greater Sacrifice Isaac is spared, but Jesus is not. Romans 8:32 shows that God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all. Provision is often discovered at the place of obedience. Conclusion The deepest message is not merely, “You must give God what you love most.” The gospel message is, “God has given what He loves most for you.” On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.
