Putin Persecution Leaves Ukrainians In Limbo

July 20, 2026·28 min
Episode Description from the Publisher

In this episode, Adrian Goldberg hears from Ukrainians left in limbo after fleeing Putin’s persecution. Following Russia’s full scale invasion in 2022 the UK – like many other European countries – opened its arms to those displaced by the fighting and more than 200,000 live here now.   But unlike refugees from other countries, Ukrainians don’t have a pathway to permanent residence in Britain. The're expected to head back home whenever the conflict ends, despite having built newlives here.   In the meantime, rules around visas and qualifications mean they are being denied jobs and educational opportunities. There are stories of doctors working as cleaners.   Adrian hears from Natalia Kogut who fled Ukraine with her two children and Professor Sara Jones at Birmingham University, who has been researching the plight of Ukrainians in the UK.
