(originally released in March 2023, not the best audio quality!!)Before there was Fyre Festival there was Woodstock 99. The festival took place from July 23-25, 1999 in Rome, New York. Though it was intended to be a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival, it ended up being anything but. It turned out to be the hottest weekend of the year, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. The festival grounds were designed to hold 50,000 people, but over 200,000 showed up. There were long lines for water and bathrooms, and the prices for food and merchandise were sky-high. And to make matters worse, there were reports of sexual assault and harassment throughout the weekend- in this episode we examine Woodstock ‘99 what went right, what went Korn, and what went wrong. Grab your chargers, put your heart in airplane mode, and maybe delete that Replika app, because today, we are stepping into the uncanny valley of AI romance. We’ll be talking about the new film Companion, starring the brilliant Sofie Thatcher. We talk about real stories of people dating AI, films like Terminator, Her & Ex Machina before finally getting a broader understanding of AI companionship- why we’re obsessed with with media about dating robots, and why our next relationship may soon come with a software update.(originally released in April of 2025)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/broads-next-door--5803223/support.
Count your pills, and lock your doors, as we gain a broader understanding of the death of Marilyn Monroe. Was it a suicide? A tragic accident? or was it something much worse?? Because the official story? It doesn’t really sit right. Because maybe she overdosed. Or accidental. Or it was intentional . Or maybe, just maybe, someone silenced her. And maybe, in the mess of all that myth and murder, we buried the real woman underneath the most recognizable face in the world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/broads-next-door--5803223/support.
Grab your marriage license and your divorce papers Today, we’re continuing to gain a Broader Understanding of a woman who was as adored as she was exploited, a woman whose name became shorthand for beauty, sexuality, tragedy, and contradiction. The woman who played the dumb blonde while reading Dostoyevsky in her trailer. The woman who could seduce the world, marry multiple times and still be left so alone.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/broads-next-door--5803223/support.
Grab a journal, get a makeover & try on that dress you’re afraid to wear in public, because today we’re getting a broader understanding of Marilyn Monroe. Or maybe we should say Norma Jeane. Because that’s kind of the problem, isn’t it? Everyone knows Marilyn Monroe. The white dress. The platinum hair. The beauty mark. The breathy voice. The sex symbol. The tragedy. But very few people know the little girl who came before her. that’s what this episode is about. Not just how Marilyn Monroe died. Or how Marilyn Monroe lived. But how Norma Jeane Baker disappeared. Because on June 1st, 1926, one hundred years ago this week, a baby girl was born in Los Angeles. And over the next thirty-six years she would become the most photographed woman in the world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/broads-next-door--5803223/support.
Grab your flashlights, your childhood urban legends, and maybe your rapidly deteriorating trust in society because today we’re getting a broader understanding of… The 2025 movie Weapons- why did it mean something different to all of us? How did comedy inspire some of it? Can we ever really keep each other safe?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/broads-next-door--5803223/support.
Grab your coffee or any emotional support beverage, maybe even a blanket, because today’s episode is one of those episodes- where we try and gain a broader understanding of a crash that may never be understood- the 2009 Taconic Parkway Tragedy And the documentary that followed, There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane It’s horrifying, it’s haunted me but it’s not scary in the way we usually talk about scary. A normal Sunday morning… that ended in a way no one can fully explain.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/broads-next-door--5803223/support.
Grab your weighted blanket and an extra hot coffee cause we are no longer supporting iced beverages, and this episode is a rough one to get through without some extra comfort. Because today we are talking about ICE and the ways this is impacting our communities, as well as helping to share some resources for people to try and counter some of the brutality. We’re going to do our best with this one, but there is a lot to cover and a lot that is constantly changing. There are so many people doing important work to help communities overcome this invasion on our rights, and hopefully this episode can cover some ground on pointing you in the right directions to show you where to look to stay informed.
