In this episode, I discuss one of the biggest mistakes associates make when evaluating their careers in BigLaw: relying on signals that often have little relationship to long-term success. Many lawyers constantly compare themselves to their peers, wondering whether they're receiving the right staffing opportunities, enough client exposure, meaningful feedback, or visible recognition. Those comparisons can create unnecessary anxiety because the metrics associates use to judge themselves are often incomplete, misleading, or simply misunderstood. I examine seven common signals that associates frequently misinterpret, including staffing on high-profile matters, heavily edited drafts, limited feedback, lack of client contact, visibility within the firm, partnership discussions, and comparisons with peers. Throughout the episode, I explain how operational realities, partner preferences, practice group differences, and firm economics influence these experiences far more than most associates realize. Rather than focusing on surface-level indicators, I encourage lawyers to evaluate the factors that truly predict long-term success, including increasing responsibility, stronger judgment, growing trust from partners, and meaningful opportunities to exercise independent thinking. At a Glance 01:20 Why BigLaw associates often measure their careers using the wrong signals 02:09 Why working on the firm's biggest matters is not always the best developmental opportunity 05:29 What extensive redline edits actually reveal about partner expectations and your growth 08:36 Why silence from partners is often a poor indicator of your performance 12:23 Understanding what client contact really says about trust and responsibility 15:49 Why visibility inside the firm can be misleading 18:18 Why the absence of partnership conversations does not necessarily signal a lack of opportunity 20:58 How unhealthy peer comparisons distort career expectations 22:28 The better questions to ask when evaluating your long-term career progress For Apple Podcasts, click here, scroll to the bottom, tap to rate with five stars, and select "Write a Review."
