A dependable and athletic defender, he often featured at right-back and occasionally at centre-back, enjoying his most consistent spell under Kenny Dalglish. Injuries, however, prevented him from securing a long-term starting role.During his time at Anfield, Kelly was part of the squad that won the 2011–12 League Cup, and he also appeared during the run to the 2012 FA Cup final, finishing as runner-up.
