Beyond Yellow Tape: Therese Apel on Cumulative Trauma, Faith, and Dark Horse Press | Initiative 99

In this special Initiative 99 edition of A Silent War Within, hosts Kevin Whitsell and Angel Deaton sit down with investigative journalist, ten-year firefighter veteran, and founder of Dark Horse Press, Therese Apel.Having spent over three decades behind the yellow police tape, riding shotgun with U.S. Marshals, covering brutal homicide scenes, and fighting structure fires on the front lines, Therese knows what diesel exhaust tastes like and what secondary trauma does to the human soul. In this deeply candid conversation, she pulls back the curtain on corporate newsroom spin, the reality of complex PTSD, and the exact moment she realized she needed help after covering the horrific Brookhaven mass shooting.Kevin, Angel, and Therese go deep into the intersection of mental health and Christian faith. They explore how cumulative operational stress is fundamentally linked to spiritual warfare, why authentic prayer means showing up broken and unfiltered before God, and how to hold onto faith when life feels like a constant storm.Key Topics Covered in This Episode:Crossing the Line: How a teenage sports writer became a seasoned crime reporter, investigative journalist, and front-line firefighter. The Weight of the Tape: The cumulative trauma of covering high-stakes crime, the Corey Godbolt confessions, and the reality of secondary trauma for journalists and first responders. The Breakpoint and Recovery: Therese opens up about her complex PTSD diagnosis, her ten-week IOP recovery program, and eight-plus years of continuous therapy.Spiritual Warfare and Mental Health: Why mental health struggles and spiritual crises intersect, the dark reality of suicide, and fighting the battle behind the scenes.Faith in the Storm: Why faith in Christ does not guarantee an easy life, examining the lives of Abraham, Joseph, and the apostles who faced brutal trials.Unfiltered Prayer: Learning to pray without ceasing, dropping the polished religious act, and bringing your true, authentic self before God.Dark Horse Press: Walking away from mainstream media to launch an independent outlet focused on the unvarnished truth and protecting the humanity behind the badge.Whether you are a firefighter, police officer, medic, dispatcher, or supporter navigating a hard season, this episode provides a powerful reminder that you are never alone in the fight.Learn more about A Silent War Within and support our non-profit mission at asilentwarwithin.com.
